Requirements 2. In the Outdoor Code, a Scout pledges to "be conservation-minded." Discuss the following with your counselor: 2A. The term sustainable architecture. Identify three features typical of green buildings. 2B. The difference between renewable building materials and recycled building materials, and how each can be used in construction. 2C. The relationship of architecture with its surrounding environment and the community. 2D. How entire buildings can be reused rather than torn down when they no longer serve their original purpose.

Outdoor Code As an American, I will do my best to - ・Be clean in my outdoor manners. I will treat the outdoors as a heritage. I will take care of it for myself and others I will keep my trash and garbage out of lakes, streams, fields, woods, and roadways. ・Be careful with fire. I will prevent wildfire. I will build my fires only where they are appropriate.
When I have finished using a fire, I will make sure it is cold out. I will leave a clean fire ring, or remove all evidence of my fire. ・Be considerate in the outdoors. I will treat public and private property with respect. I will use low-impact methods of hiking and camping. And ・Be conservation minded I will learn how to practice good conservation of soil, waters, forests, minerals, grasslands, wildlife, and energy. I will urge others to do the same.

Green or Sustainable Buildings There are three (3) common features green buildings have, which are designed to reduce the overall impact of the built environment on human health and the natural environment by: • Efficiently using energy, water, and other resources • Protecting occupant health and improving employee productivity • Reducing waste, pollution and environmental degradation

Green Building Materials What is a green building product or material? Green building materials are composed of renewable, rather than nonrenewable resources. Green materials are environmentally responsible because impacts are considered over the life of the product. Depending upon project-specific goals, an assessment of green materials may involve an evaluation of one or more of the criteria listed below. Overall material/product selection criteria: • Resource efficiency • Indoor air quality • Energy efficiency • Water conservation • Affordability

Green Building Materials - Resource Efficiency Resource Efficiency can be accomplished by utilizing materials that meet the following criteria: • Recycled Content • Natural, plentiful or renewable • Resource efficient manufacturing process • Locally available • Salvaged, refurbished, or remanufactured • Reusable or recyclable • Recycled or recyclable product packaging • Durable

What are the differences between…? • Renewable building materials - primarily new materials - rapidly renewable plant materials like bamboo and straw, etc. • Reused or reclaimed materials - primarily old materials - old bricks, stones, bottles, lumber from old buildings, grey water, etc. • Recycled building materials - primarily old or damaged materials are use in making “new” materials - metal, paper, glass, recycled stone content in concrete, etc.

Green Roofs - Benefits • Green roofs provide stormwater management benefits by: - Utilizing the biological, physical, and chemical processes found in the plant and soil complex to prevent airborne pollutants from entering the storm drain system. - Reducing the runoff volume and peak discharge rate by holding back and slowing down the water that would otherwise flow quickly into the storm drain system. Green roofs are not only aesthetically pleasing, but they also: - Reduce city “heat island” effect - Reduce CO2 impact - Reduce summer air conditioning cost - Reduce winter heat demand - Potentially lengthen roof life 2 to 3 times - Treat nitrogen pollution in rain - Negate acid rain effect - Help reduce volume and peak rates of storm-water.

Homework For Session 3, think about….. 3C. Interview someone who might be your client (such as a prospective homeowner or business owner) if you were an architect. Find out what your client's requirements would be for designing a new home or business building. Write a short program including a list of requirements for the project, the functions of the building and site, how the functions relate to one another, and the goals of the project. What should a house have? What do you want in a home? Think about what you have in your Home now.
