Understanding your GPA What does it mean? Why is it important?

What does GPA mean? GPA (Grade Point Average): A numerical representation of how well you have performed in classes Weighted GPA: Added points for courses that are more rigorous (example: Honors, AP or IB) Unweighted GPA: How well you performed in each class on a 4.0 scale.

Weighted GPA Regular Courses 4.0 scale Honors Courses 5 scale (1 additional quality point) Foreign language courses above level 2 receive honors credit AP (Advanced Placement) Courses 6.0 scale (2 additional quality point) Community College Courses 5.0 (1 additional quality point)

Why is it important? Colleges look at GPAs to admit students Scholarships look at GPAs Summer programs look at GPAs Enrichment opportunities look at GPAs To get your license you must pass 3 out of 4 courses the previous semester.

More reasons why it’s important… Sports eligibility in high school: You must pass 3 out of 4 courses the previous semester Sports eligibility in college (NCAA Clearing house) They look at unweighted GPA of your Core Academic classes only

Criteria for College Admission High School GPA Test scores (SAT or ACT) Extracurricular Activities School or Community Related Recommendations (most schools require) Essays (some schools require)

Average of students accepted into NC Schools University Weighted GPA Unweighted GPA UNC- Wilmington 4.1 3.75 East Carolina University 3.67 3.1 UNC- Chapel Hill 4.59 4.0 NC State 4.49 3.54 UNC- Charlotte 3.86 3.4 NC Central 3.2 Minimum 2.0 NC A & T 3.48 Minimum 2.5

When should a student begin working on GPA? EVERY SEMESTER in high school counts! Don’t give up on ANY courses! Start working NOW!

Weighted GPA The more Honors or AP classes, the easier it is to pull up your weighted GPA But remember… colleges look at weighted and unweighted GPA. Take the highest level that you can be successful in (A’s or B’s)

Class Rank Uses weighted GPA’s to order students in the senior class from highest GPA to lowest At WSHSCA, Class of 2017 highest weighted GPA was 3.70. Thus far, Class of 2018 at WSHSCA highest weighted GPA is 3.39? and at RVEC is 4.87

What is needed to bring up a GPA? Wanda wants to go to UNC- Charlotte Her GPA is 3.0 at the end of her Freshman Year (8 courses) What grades will she need to make in 10th and 11th grades in order to raise it to a 3.4—the minimum GPA for accepted freshman at UNC- Charlotte

Answer… Wanda must have a 3.6 GPA in 10th and 11th grades to bring the 3.0 up to a 3.4 This means an “A” in all classes 93% = 3.63
