The Fine Print STANDARDS: I can… determine a theme or central idea of a text and analyze its development over the course of the text. (RL.1.2) write an objective summary of a text. (RL.1.2) ESSENTIAL QUESTION: What does it mean to be an insider or an outsider?

Options TASK: You’ll be writing a letter to The Outsiders novel, the author, or a character from The Outsiders novel. OPTIONS: Choose ONE of the following styles: Goodbye Thank You Congratulations I’m Sorry In Sympathy Each of these templates are available in Focus under the assignment files for your grades. -Goodbye = saying farewell to the book -Thank you = thanking the book for what you learned -Congratulations = congratulating the book of 50 years being in print and the impact it’s made in that amount of time -I’m sorry = apology for judging the book too harshly at the beginning -In sympathy = writing to a character in the novel who has lost someone

Requirements All letters must: Include the five parts of a letter Include proper formatting Be no more than one-page in length Include the theme Be written neatly Use proper mechanics (spelling, grammar, punctuation)

Work Period Write a Letter to The Outsiders novel, author, or a character from the novel, using one of the 5 options You may reference the example documents in Focus (located under the assignment files in the Grades section for this class) but you don’t have to follow the templates verbatim.  Include all required elements, so you can earn your desired grade. Submit to the class inbox when finished. Due by the end of class. This example was written with an online generator: goo.gl/xPHFLe
