(Conservation pp. 262-273) Objectives • Learn about conservation • Apply learned information to a quiz Key Words Smog Ozone Aquaculture Alternative energy source Recycle

Pollution in Air and Water • Fossil fuels release pollution into the environment as they are burned for energy. • Smog: Air pollution that is caused by the burning of fossil fuels. Fossil Fuels Smog • Chemicals made in factories cause pollution as well.

Pollution not only affects the Earth’s surface. Ozone: A layer of gas above Earths’ surface that protects living things on Earth from the Sun’s dangerous radiation.

Thinking critically…. Use the information you know to formulate an answer as to why the sun’s rays are harmful to us and the Earth?

Conservation that protect Mississippi’s many natural resources Healthy Forests Reserve Program Encourages private landowners to use their land to help protect habitats for species, such as gopher frogs, the blackpine snake, and the longleaf pine.

MS has a large timber industry. Tree farms Fish farms MS has a large timber industry. Tree farms specifically grow trees for the timber industry so that the trees in the woods and animals’ natural habitats are not destroyed. MS has the most tree farms than any other U.S. state! MS has a large fishing industry. Fish farms practice aquaculture. - Aquaculture: A technique where fish farms repopulate fish and crustacean populations in a contained environment.

Energy can come from the wind, water, and Sun – all natural resources. Alternative energy source Wind Water Sun Alternative energy source: Any source of energy other than fossil fuels.

Alternative energy sources decrease pollution in the environment Alternative energy sources decrease pollution in the environment. Deriving energy from them is a way to conserve.

Conserve through the 3Rs Reduce - example: Carrying a few items from the store in our arms to cut down on plastic bags in landfills. 2. Reuse - example: Use washable cloth napkins rather than paper ones that will fill up landfills. 3. Recycle. - example: practicing recycling so that those items can be made into new things rather than sitting in a landfill. Recycle: Saving and taking reusable materials to places where they can be made into something new.

Thinking critically… What are some specific examples of how participating in the 3Rs can have a big positive impact on the Earth, animals plants, and humans? REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE
