I want you to talk about what you think you saw. It is Ok to have two completely different ideas of what you saw. I will then write down what you think you saw. T: How close were you? T: what do you think this shows? If they say terrorists ask them why, what is the evidence – do not refuse any suggestions – Ask them to explain their thinking. When pupils have got to the point where they have exhausted the suggestions/discussion ask them if they would like to know what it shows. These are graduates from a Police academy in Iran, academy for police women. It is worth making a statement expressing disaproval/condemnation of violence especially gun violence – use of weapons, state it is always preferable to settle discord/conflict through talk/negotiation. However there are times when others are determined to do harm to others, criminals or terrorists and the government, the military and police have no other option but to defend ordinary people. So it is important police are well trained. These are the top graduates who are showing how they have learned to take apart, clean and re-assemble weapons blindfolded. This is essential. Imagine you are defending ordinary people from an attack at night and your gun jams. You need to be able to fix the gun without using a light – otherwise the attackers will see where you are – they will shoot you. So these are very skilled police women there to defend ordinary people. T: can ask pupils if they have any comments/reflections on this?

Hurricane Katrina

What would you do? You have nearly run out of food and clean water , you have very little money, banks are all shut down (no power even for cash machines) , there are some shops nearby but nobody to work in them [they are all at home looking after their own families] roads are all blocked or flooded so you cannot go to work, cannot leave to find help, everywhere for miles is flooded, your family are becoming very hungry and soon very thirsty.
