Aim of the Surah QA Can anyone finish this...? “They planned and......” The main aim of the Surah is to show the Power of Allah (swt) no matter what we may decide to do, if He hasn’t willed it – it will not happen, and vice versa. “......Allah (swt) [also] Planned, and Allah (swt) is the Best of Planners” (Qur`an 3:54)

QA Aim of the Surah It also teaches us about...

Studying Verses 1-7 QA Background: 12 Tribes Binyamin and P. Yusuf were brothers born to the same mother The 12 Tribes of Bani Isra’il come from the sons of P. Yusuf 12 Tribes

Studying Verses 1-7 QA Vs 1 – 3: Importance of the Arabic Language, Importance of learning from stories Why are stories a good way to learn? Importance of the Arabic Language It is the language of the Arabs – to whom the Holy Prophet (S) had been sent. The Arabic language is very rich with vocabulary, idioms, verses and prose. It can convey the message more precisely than any other language. Importance of Learning from Stories: Stories can show practical examples from history. Learning about other peoples lives and experience brings knowledge into a reality. Stories are interesting and a good way of attracting attention of people. People are more eager to learn from stories and profound lessons can be learnt. People love and can understand stories irrespective of their level of intellect, education, background . . . etc.

Studying Verses 1-7 QA Vs 4 – 5: Prophet Yusuf (as) sees a dream and recounts it to this father Prophet Ya`qub (as). Who tells Prophet Yusuf (as) to keep this dream to himself in case his brothers grow jealous and devise a plan against him. NB. Shows his Prophethood – as Prophet’s dreams are Wahy – therefore reliable, this dream predicted P. Yusuf’s future Discussion Point: This verse tells us an important lesson that one shouldn’t disclose everything that happens in one’s life. Even close friends should not know everything, as it can be harmful sometimes. Precaution and prevention is always better.

Studying Verses 1-7 QA Vs 6 – 7: Allah (swt) shows He has chosen the family of Prophet Ya`qub (as) to be honoured He confirms that Prophethood will be bestowed upon Prophet Yusuf (as) Prophet Yusuf (as) was given the ability to interpret dreams Lots can be learnt from the story of Prophet Yusuf (as)

Studying Verses 1-7 QA Extended Learning: Why were P. Yusuf and Binyamin “favoured”? They were the youngest in their family Their mother had passed away when they were very young and so needed extra care Learning Point: These verses were revealed at the time of the Islamic boycott. They helped to ease the Holy Prophet (saw)’s grief and worry – reassuring him of victory like Prophet Yusuf (as)

Sibling Rivalry Jealousy Keeping Faith Being good to others Plenary QA Group work: From what you already know, what other things can you learn from the story of Prophet Yusuf (as)? Thinking points: Sibling Rivalry Jealousy Use the thinking points to try to get class to discuss how these things are addressed in the Surah and what we can learn from them. Keeping Faith Being good to others
