Unit 7 - Exponents

Product of Powers When you multiply two factors having the same base, keep the common base and add the exponents.

Product of Powers

Product of Powers

Power to a Power If you are raising a power to another power, multiply the exponents. *Do not change the base.*

Power to a Power

Power to a Power

Quotient to a Power Simplify the fraction, if possible. Raise the numerator and denominator to the outside power.

Quotient to a Power

Quotient to a Power

Quotient of Powers When you are dividing like bases, keep the common base and subtract the exponents. Always subtract top minus bottom! Variables with positive exponents go on top, and variables with negative exponents go on the bottom.

Quotient of Powers

Quotient of Powers

Quotient of Powers

Negative Exponents To change the sign of an exponent, move it to either the top or bottom of the fraction. Your final answer cannot have any negative exponents.
