World War 1 History 20

Franco-Prussian War (1870-1871) France weakened, Germany strengthened Russo-Japanese War (1904-1905) Major blow to the Russian Fleet Defeat also provoked a serious political crisis that led to the Russian Revolution Leading up to the War

Leading up to the War The Austria-Hungarian Ethnic Dispute Before WW1, there were many ethnic minority groups Looking at a map of the Austria- Hungarian Empire showing these minorities, why do you think there would be tension between the many ethnicities? Leading up to the War

Why would there be tension between these 10 ethnic groups?

Why did this work in the past? Loyalty to the Emperor: Francis Joseph was personally very popular throughout the empire. However! His nephew The Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria, the heir to the thrown, and his wife Sophie were widely disliked and were generally treated poorly by the citizens of Austria-Hungary This eventually lead to the assignation of Franz Ferdinand… but more on that later! Why did this work in the past?

Map Activity! Label and colour in the Pre WW1 Map Make sure to title the page with something along the lines of “1914 - Pre WW1” Use your phones as a source for answers Map Activity!

Militarism Alliances Imperialism Nationalism Now what are these…? 4 M.A.I.N. Causes of WW1

Government policy of investing in military, strengthening armed forces, and pursuit of military ideals M is for Militarism

Many alliances had been signed by countries between the years 1879 and 1914 Important note: This meant the countries involved had no option but to declare war if one of their allies declared war or were attacked A is for Alliances

A policy or practice by which a country increases its power by gaining control over other areas of the world This was seen with the colonization of Africa I is for imperialism

And lastly… N is for Nationalism An extreme feeling that people have of being loyal to and proud of their country often with the belief that it is better and more important than other countries And lastly… N is for Nationalism

Nationalism continued Quick Write! What makes us different/“better” than other countries? How would you feel if Canada as a country was threatened? How do you feel when you hear our national anthem playing at a sporting event or a large ceremony What kind of events cause you to feel the most patriotic? (Remembrance Day ceremony, sporting events, etc.) Take 5-7 minutes to write your thoughts on this Nationalism continued

Nationalism continued As we have discussed, the Austro- Hungarian Empire was home to a multitude of ethnic groups. Some of these groups wanted their political independence Nationalism continued

Nationalism continued The Germans of Austria, who held the political power, constituted only one- third of the Empire’s population The German dominance was being challenged by Hungarians, Czechs, Serbs and other ethnic groups Nationalism continued

Create Ethnic groups layer to map Use an overhead sheet and markers to create a second layer to your map Mark in the many ethnic borders Label and colour in these ethnic groups Make sure you include all groups from the list on the left  Create Ethnic groups layer to map

Colonialism: This is the policy or practice of acquiring full or partial political control over another country, occupying it with settlers, and exploiting it economically. Basically… These imperialistic nations are practicing colonialism Since imperialism is to extend a country's power through military and diplomacy, There were obviously many nations interested in expanding their empire Imperialism

These nations included The following are the major imperialist nations The British Empire France Russia Germany Spain Denmark These nations included The United States The Ottoman Empire Portugal Belgium Netherlands Italy

A web of alliances grew from 1870- 1914 with numerous treaties and agreements This effectively created 2 camps bound by commitment to maintain sovereignty Alliances

Alliances Activity: Number off into 6 groups Grab one of the envelopes with papers inside Create a concept map with the contents Once you have finished creating your concept map, get it approved by the teacher Write it down on the handout Alliances

Alliances 2 alliance groups formed Triple Entente (France, England, Russia) Triple Alliance(Germany, Austria-Hungary, Italy) Alliances

Like before, Create a layer with an overhead sheet over your map of Europe in 1914 On this map you are going to outline the 2 allied groups and colour them in with 2 colours much like the map on the next slide Alliances Map Layer
