Why did this work in the past? Loyalty to the Emperor: Francis Joseph was personally very popular throughout the empire. However! His nephew The Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria, the heir to the thrown, and his wife Sophie were widely disliked and were generally treated poorly by the citizens of Austria-Hungary This eventually lead to the assignation of Franz Ferdinand… but more on that later!
