What is Romanticism? Romanticism is an artistic movement that is based on emotion not reason. It’s a reaction to the Enlightenment’s need for logic and reason. Romantics felt the best things about being human were passion and emotion. Romantic artists tried to achieve an emotional response with their art. Tended to dislike Industrialization

Romantic Literature It was a common for romantic writers to combine history, legend, and folklore. The Three Musketeers The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Architecture would also be influenced.

Romantic Music Romantic composers tried to stir deep emotional responses. They were some of the 1st composers to utilize the full range of instruments. They would also use traditional folk songs to glorify their nations. Nationalism Ludwig van Beethoven & Peter Tchaikovsky were Romantics.

Romantic Art Romantic Artist tended to break free from the highly structured art of the Enlightenment. Tried to achieve an emotional response They too used history as a basis for many of their pieces. Humans were often small and not the main focus of the work of art.

The Call to Realism The harshness of the I.R. caused dislike of Romanticism. The Realists emerged and focused on the good but also the harsh realities of life in art and literature. Charles Dickens was well known for writing about the harsh realities of the French and Industrial Revolutions.
