Information People form a government to provide structure for making and enforcing decisions that affect the common good. Governments have constitutions to define their structure and power. The U.S. Constitution divides power between the national and state governments through a separation of powers. Power is limited through the use of checks and balances. The U.S. is a democracy which means the government gets power from the consent of the governed to avoid tyranny and protect people’s rights.

U.S. Constitution We need to study the past to understand laws and rights that people have today. This entire course relates to the U.S. Constitution. At the end of this year, you will learn many rights and limitations you have as a United States citizen.
