Welcome to the Duke of Edinburgh’s award at Ridgeway!

What is the D of E? An internationally recognised achievement 3 levels to the award: bronze, silver, gold You can start bronze at age 14 Finish gold by age 25

The 4 Sections Volunteering Physical About an hour per week Skill Expedition About an hour per week

The 4 Sections Volunteering Physical Skill Expedition 3 months Plan, train for and undertake a 2 day, 1 night expedition All participants must undertake a further 3 months in one of the volunteering, physical or skills sections

Volunteering Examples of past volunteering sections: Helping younger children at brownies / cubs Charity shop Student librarian Volunteer at park run (Lydiard park) Helping older people (gardening or cleaning) Coaching at a sports club

Physical Examples of past physical sections: Running or cycling, either with a club or keeping a log of personal achievements Dance Any sports club Fitness classes Horse riding

Skill This cannot be a physical activity – working on your backhand or golf swing can’t count Past skills sections have included: Music exam Any extra GCSE tutoring outside school Dog training Drama (Les Miserables) Flying / gliding

Expedition 2 day, 1 night expedition Must undertake a practice expedition and training first You will plan your own route, be completely self-sufficient for 2 days, walking in groups of 4-7 friends

Expedition kit Things that we provide: Tent Roll mat Rucksack Stove and fuel Map & compass Some waterproofs (not enough for everyone)

Expedition kit Things that you will need: Walking boots (Must support ankles). Clothes to walk in (Artificial fibres to wick out). Sleeping bag (Low profile which has a small pack size).
