Preparing to Volunteer What is safeguarding? Everybody has the right to be safe no matter who they are or what their circumstances. Safeguarding is about protecting children, young people and vulnerable adults from abuse or neglect. We are all responsible for the safety of children, young people and vulnerable adults.

Remember: Be open and honest with the person at risk from the outset about why, what, how and with whom information will or could be shared. Seek advice on whether and what information you can share if you are in any doubt (do not disclose the identity of the person where possible). Seek consent, where possible. You may still share information without consent but you’ll need to base your judgment on facts. Consider safety and well-being of the person or persons at risk Information shared needs to be necessary, proportionate, relevant, accurate, timely and secure.

Information disclosed should be: Clear regarding the nature of the problem and the purpose of sharing it. Based on fact and not assumption. Restricted to those with a legitimate need to know. Relevant to a specific incident. Recorded in writing, with reasons stated.
