Today we will learn about the structure of DNA… SCIENCE NEED TODAY Day 1 Anticipation Set DNA Notes Videos DNA Controversy

Expectations NO ELECTRONICS – unless we’re using them for science Late assignments – 75% May fix only 3 incompletes May correct as much as needed – I can tell the difference Use highlighter to emphasize vocab in notes so you can find it!!!

Fill in anticipation guide…

Answer the following questions as you read… N19: DNA DNA 19 Answer the following questions as you read… p.

We need to know 5 words…. DNA Double Helix Chromosome Gene Nucleotide

DNA is.. the shortened name for DEOXYRIBONUCLEIC ACID

DNA is… genetic material inside of each cell

DNA is.. the instructions for an all of organism’s functions.

DNA is.. protected in cells by the nucleus. Looks like ball of yarn most of the time

DOUBLE HELIX is… Structure of DNA two sides and is twisted, like a twisted ladder.

CHROMOSOMES are… sections of DNA wrapped around proteins.

CHROMOSOMES are… Always found in pairs Like socks!

CHROMOSOMES are… Males: XY Females: XX

CHROMOSOMES are… Every organism has a specific number of chromosome pairs. Humans have 23 pair, dogs have 62 pair, flies have 8 pair, cows have 60 pair corn have 20 pair.

GENES… appear as bands across the chromosome pair.

GENES… About 20,000 in humans Each chromosome has around 1000

GENES… Specific section of DNA

NUCLEOTIDES The smallest piece of DNA The order they are written in determines the meaning of DNA

NUCLEOTIDES Molecules with long names: A, T, G and C.

NUCLEOTIDES Connect in pairs from each side of double helix to hold molecule together A –T & G-C “All Teachers Go Crazy.”

Today we will learn about the structure of DNA… SCIENCE NEED TODAY Day 1 Bill Nye – 16:30 DNA Controversy Videos Complete Handout

So Who Figured it all out (1953)? Died 1958 Wilkins – worked at Cambridge Watson & Crick – Model Makers Franklin xray defraction Wilkins stole Franklin’s Pictures and gave to Nobel Prize (Medicine) 1961

Correct guide with NEW COLOR…

How is DNA of each human similar? All Double Helix All in nucleus All have 23 Chromosomes All have 20,000 Genes All written with A-T and G-C

How is DNA of each human different? Order of Nucleotide pairs is different within each gene Males XY while Females XX

In your notes, think of DNA like a book.. Chapter Sentence Letter DNA Chromosome Gene Nucleotide Full set in each cell 23pair(46total) per cell 1,000/csome 20,000/cell 3 billion pairs per cell
