What is the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance — or VITA — program? Free tax preparation services at a nearby location Tax volunteers trained in military issues Locations that are both on and off base — often available at an installation’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance location or Legal Assistance office

Who runs the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program? Program is run by Armed Forces Tax Council in partnership with Internal Revenue Service Volunteers receive specialized training in military taxes – such as combat zone benefits, living in multiple locations, the Earned Income Tax credit and more Volunteers’ training in military taxes helps you take full advantage of credits and deductions, so you may save even more

Tax services vary by location Depending on your site, you may be able to: Self-file using MilTax software at kiosks and work at your own pace – with trained help nearby if you need it. Have the services of IRS-trained volunteers to prepare and file your taxes. Arrange to drop off your paperwork with a volunteer and come back to e-file when your return is ready. Note: MilTax software is free for all active duty, National Guard and reserve military personnel and their dependents, regardless of rank or income.

When are VITA locations open? Most sites are open from mid-January to after April 15 Some offices remain open a few months longer Hours and services vary, so call ahead to check availability and whether you need an appointment You can always visit MilitaryOneSource.mil or call 800-342-9647 for assistance in finding sites near you.
