Planning Implementation Evaluation Increasing Attendance at Shaver’s Creek Shaver’s Creek Environmental Education Center in Stone Valley; September 11, 2016; 9:30 AM – 5:30 PM; free to participants Planning Implementation Evaluation Situational Analysis Shaver’s Creek is the local environmental center located about a half hour from State College, a city comprised mostly of college students. College students with low income and limited access to transportation Many students prefer activities other than outdoor recreation, which is a great way to relieve stress and connect with nature Needs Assessment There is low attendance at Shaver’s Creek Environmental Center. Purpose of the Program The program will inform participants of all the recreational opportunities at Shaver’s Creek and how to utilize them safely. Inputs/Resources Shaver’s Creek Environmental Center as venue High ropes course facilities Materials: 30 safety vests, 10 canoes, 10 kayaks, 30 fishing rods, 30 oars stored at Lake Perez 4 Shaver’s Creek staff to present to and direct participants, 2 high ropes instructors,1 raptor intern, 2 canoe and kayak instructors 100 apples, 100 granola bars, and 100 bags of snack size bags of pretzels Estimated Budget Venue (Shaver’s Creek): $200 Equipment: $200 Advertising: $100 Outputs – Products Shaver’s Creek informational pamphlets Maps of surrounding trail systems [list products (materials, tools, handouts, worksheets, books, etc.) that will (need to) be created specifically for use in your program to facilitate the activities] Outputs – Activities Introduction to facilities presented by Shaver’s Creek staff at amphitheater Lecture on outdoor safety following introduction at amphitheater Participants can then choose from available activities: Raptor Center show Hiking trails around Lake Perez Canoeing and kayaking on Lake Perez Fishing on Lake Perez High ropes course at Stone Valley Audience/Participants Penn State students residing in University Park or State College Outcomes/Impacts Short-term Goal: Increase participants’ knowledge of opportunities at Shaver’s Creek. Objective: At the end of the workshop 80% of the participants will be able to list at least five activities available at Shaver’s Creek. Intermediate-term Goal: Increase usage of weekend bus service to Shaver’s Creek. Objective: One year after the program, 60% of students at University Park will take the bus to Shaver’s Creek at least once a semester. Long-term Goal: Increase overall attendance at Shaver’s Creek. Objective: Three years after the program, there will be a 10% increase in the number of students at University Park utilizing Shaver’s Creek at least once a semester. Assessment & Evaluation Bus clicker system to record number of students taking the weekend bus shuttle Conduct before and after surveys of participants in class to see how their knowledge has increased 32 Transportation: $200 Food: $200 Recruitment & Advertising Offer free snacks Print Shaver’s Creek stickers Offer free transportation from HUB Advertise -posters in HUB, on CATA buses, and library -bulletin boards in residence halls, and class buildings External Factors Other major events could be planned during same weekend bad weather could hinder event activities and decrease attendance Bus transportation on weekends for students could be cancelled in semesters after program, hindering future use of the center
