HOW TO MOTIVATE YOUR TEAM EFFECTIVELY Getting the best from your team, even in times of uncertainty and change Caroline Cooper Zeal Coaching

Agenda The myths and truths around motivation How to discover what motivates your team 3 keys to a motivated team Sustaining motivation even in times of uncertainty and change

Your staff are your biggest single overhead. True or false? Your staff are your most valued asset. True or false? Your staff are treated as your most valued asset True or false?

Why it’s important Lack of motivation Poor performance Absenteeism Poor customer service Low productivity High staff turnover Increased costs Loss of business Less profit

The Myths….. Motivation is something you do to people Most employees just aren’t interested Money is the only thing that motivates Giving recognition only raises people’s expectations Most employees resist change I know what motivates them – it’s the same thing for everyone It’s impossible to work out what motivates people

What motivates you? What are the things that motivate you outside work? What are the things that motivate you at work? What are your top 3 from either list? What are the 2 or 3 things that most demotivate you? What are the key themes?

Your most valued employee What are the things that motivate them outside work? What are the things that motivate them at work? What are their top 3 from either list? What are the 2 or 3 things that most demotivate them? What are the key themes?

Your least valued employee What are the things that motivate them outside work? What are the things that motivate them at work? What are their top 3 from either list? What are the 2 or 3 things that most demotivate them? What are the key themes?

How accurate? Ask them What do you see them doing outside work – what do they enjoy about this? What do they least enjoy about their job? – what frustrates/ annoys/ bores them? What do they value about the job? What do they find most enjoyable/ rewarding/ challenging? What would make the job more rewarding/ challenging/enjoyable…..,etc?

3 keys to a motivated team

1. Direction What’s expected Set an example Agreed standards Provide tools, resources and training

2. Look and listen Approachable Support Consult Act on concerns Show an interest What is important to them

3. Recognition Feedback Reward Celebrate and share success Use strengths Develop

The most important words 5 "Well done, you did great" 4 "What is your opinion?“ 3 "If you please" 2 "Thank you" And the most important single word of all is "You"!

Uncertainty and change Rumours start Productivity drops People leave

Communicate, communicate, communicate….. What’s going on and what’s needed Ask for ideas Give advance warning – what’s going to happen and why, what is their involvement Feed back on progress and results

Take Action What can you do tomorrow to discover what motivates your team? What one thing you could do differently on a day to day basis that would help get the best from your team? If your business is going through uncertainty or change, what one thing could you do to help sustain motivation?

The way to get started is to quit talking and begin doing Walt Disney
