What are the causes of WWI? WWI Declaration of War What are the causes of WWI?

The war became a stalemate in which the army had dug into trenches with a “no man’s land” in-between.

WWI was a total-industrialized war Drafted civilians replaced Professional soldiers Women’s roles changed Government took more control of economy Governments also took control of news

Propaganda One-sided information aimed to convince people of a certain point of view

Russia was in the midst of a revolution

Zimmerman Telegram decoded: Germany would help Mexico get back NM, TX, and AZ if Mexico joined Germany.

In 1917, Germany resumed unrestricted submarine warfare sinking three American ships. U-Boats UC 44 Class U-boat: 1) Aft torpedo tubes 2) Electric motor 3) Main engine 4) Control room 5) Mine tubes 6) Forward torpedo tubes 7) Crew quarters

Speech to Congress, 2 April 1917 I have called the Congress into extraordinary session because there are serious, very serious, choices of policy to be made, and made immediately, which it was neither right nor constitutionally permissible that I should assume the responsibility of making …….

In his speech to Congress Wilson explains ….. Why the US should enter the war What we need to do to prepare for the war What are our objectives in entering the war.

Broke promise to U.S. made in April 1916

What the U.S. had to do to get ready for WWI Cooperation with Allies Financial assistance to those Allies Organization and mobilization of all U.S. resources for needs both at home and abroad Full equipment of the navy, especially focusing what is needed to defeat the submarines Addition to armed forces: 500,000+ Funding from Congress for all these programs

Objectives/Attitudes of Wilson vindicate the principles of peace and justice protect the freedom of the people of the world punish nations that deny their individual citizen’s rights Not made at German people, rather at their government Never be a friend with a government that does things like unrestricted warfare Want security for democratic governments of the world Peace for the world; liberation of peoples Rights of nations great and small U.S. has no selfish ends to serve and desire no conquest (land) We will only play fair Only see ourselves at war with Germany, not other Central powers

A formal declaration of war followed four days later, on April 6, 1917.

In his speech he continually points out the wrong doings of the German government. He then talks about the German people and says… “We have no quarrel with the German people.  We have no feeling towards them but one of sympathy and friendship.  It was not upon their impulse that their government acted in entering this war.  It was not with their previous knowledge or approval.” Why do you think he makes a distinction between the German government and the German People?

Technology Question from yesterday Technology Question from yesterday *Choose which piece of technology you think had the most impact on WWI? *Explain why it is the best 2 sentences *Choose which technology you think would have the most impact on todays.

Wilson’s Declaration of War Against Germany   Read the primary document together in pairs. Note that I have defined a few vocabulary words for you in the margin. As you are reading please complete the following in your spiral: Create a graphic organizer (not an outline) of the reasons why the U.S. entered World War I. Make a bullet-point list of what the U.S had to do to get ready for the Great War. With the remaining part of the document please identify the objectives and attitudes that Wilson expresses about the goals the U.S. has for fighting this war. What does he hope to accomplish as far as international goals of peace? What does he fear would happen if the U.S. did not help in the war? Describe Wilson’s attitude toward the government and people of Germany. Considering their role in WWI, do you find his attitude surprising? Discuss how the immigration wave from 1870’s-1910’s could have influenced what Wilson was willing to say about Germany.
