CSTA slides for K-5 teachers to explain to NGSS to parents This is a deck of slides that teachers can pick and choose from and modify to fit their needs. Feel free to rearrange and change the text fit your needs. The first slides are an introduction for the beginning of the year and the second set following the blank slide are for the end of the year. It has been set up for 3rd grade to give you a model that you can edit and adapt to your grade As this is a template, you may need to fill in information appropriate to your school & grade. Also, add your name, logo and website. You may want to post your version of this on your website, share during Back to School Night and Open House, have playing at a science event or use in anyway that serves your needs. There are blank slides at the end to make your own slides.

School logo Teacher Name 3rd Grade Our School’s Plan for California’s Next Generation Science Standards Actively Involve Students in Science Prepare Children for College & Careers School logo Teacher Name 3rd Grade This PowerPoint presentation was made possible (in part) by a grant from Carnegie Corporation of New York. Science Education Increases Success Science prepares students for college Employers seek employees who Think critically Analyze information Solve complex problems 25% of new jobs involve Science, Technology, Engineering & Math (STEM)

What is different about NGSS? Less of this: More of this: Following step-by-step instructions Teachers presenting models explaining what happens in the natural world Discussions seeking one right answer Learning facts not connected to real science and engineering work Unrelated learning from Year to year Creating their own investigations Developing models to explain phenomena and solve problems Reasoning and supporting their conclusions with evidence Using science to solve real problems Learning connected engineering and science practices and concepts

Preparing Students for the Future Think – Do – Know Ask your own questions like a scientist Do activities like a scientist might do Make your own discoveries Learn more though memorable experiences

What might students investigate? 3rd grade Does the shell shape help it survive? What are the advantages of living in groups? Can patterns predict the future weather? How high will the ball bounce?

Nurture Your Scientist at Home Encourage your child’s natural curiosity Let your child ask the questions Enable your child to guide the investigation Seek creative solutions while gardening, cooking and other activities at home Get involved in community activities, like water clean-ups or visit science centers

California’s Next Generation Science Standards Students are actively involved in the science Children remember experiences They learn from their own discoveries They develop life, college and career skills Thinking on their own Problem solving Communication Collaboration

Prepared for the Future Science education increases success at college and in careers 25% of new jobs involve Science, Technology, Engineering & Math (STEM) Most careers expect employees to Think critically Analyze information Solve complex problems

Next year in science, students will: Find out more about plants and animals Learn about Earth and the Solar System Explore how energy is made and used Discover how water, sound and light waves move Understand ways to solve problems In each grade, California Science Standards build on what students have been taught previously

Summer Science Ideas Positively reinforce curiosity Get your child to guide the exploration of things that interests him or her Ask, what might happen if … Participate in community water clean-ups Visit zoos, science centers, planetariums, library science events & maker fairs Explore nature in your yard or at a park
