Pronouns: Definitions A PRONOUN is a word that takes the place of a noun, a group of words acting as a noun, or another pronoun. An ANTECEDENT is the noun or pronoun to which the pronoun refers. A PERSONAL pronoun refers to a specific person or thing and can be either SINGULAR or PLURAL 1st person: Indicates the person speaking 2nd person: Indicates the person being addressed 3rd person: indicates the person or thing being discussed. SINGULAR PLURAL 1st person: I, me we, us 2nd person: you you 3rd person: he, him, she, her, it they, them

PRONOUNS: DEFINITIONS (continued) A POSSESSIVE pronoun indicates possession or ownership. take place of the possessive form of a noun When placed in front of a noun, possessive pronouns function as ADJECTIVES. SINGULAR PLURAL 1st person my, mine our, ours 2nd person your, yours your, yours 3rd person his, her, hers, its their, theirs Example: My coat and your bookbag are in her locker.

PRONOUNS: DEFINITIONS, continued A REFLEXIVE pronoun refers to a noun or another pronoun and indicates that the same person or thing is involved. An INTENSIVE pronoun adds emphasis to a noun or another pronoun. SINGULAR PLURAL 1st person myself ourselves 2nd person yourself yourselves 3rd person himself, herself, themselves itself Examples: I bought myself a pair of jeans (reflexive). I myself bought a pair of jeans (intensive).

PRONOUNS: DEFINITIONS, continued A DEMONSTRATIVE pronoun points out specific persons, places, things or ideas. This these that those An INDEFINITE pronoun refers to persons, places, or things in a more general way than a noun does. Common indefinite pronouns end in –one, -thing, or –body Anyone, something, everybody Other common indefinite pronouns include both, all , may, few, none, most, etc.
