Smoky Hill High School IB Exam Registration May 2017 What candidates and their parents/guardians need to know…

What you will learn this evening How are the exams scored? What are the requirements to earn the diploma? When should the exams be taken? Test Higher Level or Standard Level? What are the exam fees? What is the registration process? NEW: Using Managebac

How are the exams scored? IB exams are scored on a scale of 1 (lowest) to 7 (highest) 45 is the maximum number of points awarded. (6) grade 7’s + 3 bonus points for A’s on Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge papers. The final subject grade is a combination of the internal assessment (IA) grade and the external assessment (exam). Depending upon the subject, the IA grade is 20-50% of the final grade.

What are the requirements to earn the IB diploma? Candidates must: Test in all six areas Register for 3 HL (higher level) and 3 SL (standard level) exams. Candidates may register for 4 HL. Score a minimum of 24 points (at least 12 points in HL’s) Fulfill CAS, Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge (ToK) requirements. Important: An “E” grade for either Theory of Knowledge or Extended Essay is automatic failing condition regardless of point total.

The IB Diploma will be awarded if these 10 conditions are met… 1. CAS requirements have been met. 2. Candidate’s total points are 24 or more. 3. There is no “N” awarded for a contributing subject. 4. There is no “E” awarded for both of theory of knowledge and/or the extended essay. 5. There is no grade 1 awarded in a subject/level. 6. There are no more than 2 grade 2’s awarded (HL or SL). 7. There are no more than 3 grade 3’s or below awarded (HL or SL). 8. The candidate has gained 12 or more points on HL subjects (for candidates who register for four HL subjects, the three highest grades count). 9. The candidate has gained 9 or more points on SL subjects (candidates who register for two SL subjects must gain at least 5 points at SL). 10. The candidate has not been found guilty of academic misconduct.

When should my son/daughter test?

Testing Junior or Senior Year??? Diploma candidates may sit for all six exams in their senior year. Anticipated candidates (juniors) may sit for up to two exams. *If you are taking the following subjects, you MUST test this year: Math SL, Math Studies SL, Eco Systems SL, Chemistry SL, Level 5 in a World Language. You are allowed to test Level 4 in a language (except for Japanese ab initio) Course candidates (in 6th subject areas only) may sit for exams either year, but if sitting for an HL exam, it must be during his/her senior year.

Higher Level (HL) or Standard Level (SL) ? Candidates should choose their strongest subjects for their HL exams. Any subject combination is acceptable as long as there is one subject from each group and there are 3 HL’s and 3 SL’s. (Can test 4 HL’s and 2 SL’s) Candidates should think about their strengths and talk with their teachers and IB counselors. Candidates can take a class for two years and still test SL. Juniors cannot take an HL exam.

What are the six subject areas? Group 1-English Group 2-World Language Group 3-Social Science Group 4-Experimental Science Group 5-Math Group 6-Arts or a 2nd Group 2-5

What are some sample testing combinations?

Students who are strong in math and science… Math HL Science HL 6th subject HL or next strongest subject World language SL History SL English SL

Students who are strong in humanities… History HL English HL Third HL (6th subject humanities/art or next strongest area) Math SL Science SL World Language SL

In what ways does IB help with college costs?

Exam Fees May 2017 $168 $116/subject $20/subject $10 N/A Seniors Juniors Registration Fee None if tested last year, otherwise $168 $168 Subject Fee $116/subject Courier mailing fee $20/subject IB Stole Fee $10 N/A

Is it worth the expense?

Let’s look at the numbers… The cost… The benefit… $46,422 is the average cost of attendance (tuition and fees only) for one year at University of Denver. (private) $35,079 is the average cost of attendance (tuition and fees only) for one year at a CU Boulder (out of state) $11,531 is the average cost of attendance (tuition and fees only) for one year at a CU Boulder (in state) Academic year 2016-2017 $994 is the cost of six IB exams which could translate to 24 credits or a full year of tuition at a Colorado college or university. 4 is what candidates need to score in each subject to earn their IB Diploma!
