Presentation transcript:

After Bannockburn Great victory for Bruce and Scots Bruce had full control over Scotland Many more nobles accepted him as King Ended power of nobles who opposed Bruce However, Edward II still refused to - Recognise Bruce as King of Scots - Scotland as separate nation The battle was won but the war continued……

After Bannockburn Bruce used force…. Scots recaptured Berwick in 1319 Bruce made repeated raids into north England No help to areas from Edward II English paid money to stop these raids

After Bannockburn Bruce used force…. 1315 Edward Bruce went to Ireland to fight English there until death in 1318 Bruce held parliaments, passed laws, encouraged growth of trade and burghs Nobles opposing Bruce ‘disinherited’ (lost land)

After Bannockburn Bruce used diplomacy at home…. Nobles opposing Bruce ‘disinherited’ (lost land) Nobles could not hold land in both Scotland and England These properties used to reward Bruce’s followers Regular Parliaments held passing laws / encouraging growth of trade and burghs

After Bannockburn Aim of Scots was to persuade English to accept 1) Bruce was rightful King 2) Scotland as independent country Edward II persuaded Pope John XXII to excommunicate Bruce….

People of Scotland replied by sending message from Scottish nobles… The Declaration of Arbroath Date - 6 April 1320 Written by - Bernard Linton, Chancellor of Scotland and the Abbot of Arbroath Carried seals of 8 earls and 31 barons

Declaration of Arbroath outlined… Scotland had always been independent country History of Scots and struggle against Kings of England How Edward I took advantage and used violence against Scots Bruce was rightful King because He had earned it by rescuing the Scots The Scots had made him King If Bruce tired to put Scotland under English control then he would be driven out and replaced (Constitutional Monarchy) Promised if English stop there aggression Scots would join them in crusades in Holy Land

Extract from the Declaration ‘For so long as there shall be one hundred of us alive, we will never consent to be ruled by the English. It is in truth not for glory, nor riches, nor honours that we are fighting, but for freedom - for that alone, which no honest man gives up but with life itself.’
