Choosing a Feeding Method Each feeding method has advantages. If the baby is thriving and the parents are comfortable with the method, they have made the right choice for them. 1. Breastfeeding 2. Bottle feeding

Breast Feeding In many cultures, breast feeding always has been the only safe, practical way to feed infants. This was true of Western societies until the early 1900’s. Perfect Food –Breast milk is easier to digest & rarely causes constipation. Babies only nurse until they are full, so they are less likely to be overfed. Antibodies –Breast milk carries disease fighting agents called antibodies. They help protect the baby from illness during the 1st few months of life. Breast-fed babies generally have fewer illnesses than bottle-fed babies and tend to develop fewer food allergies as they grow.

Breast Feeding… Convenient and Economic – A mother’s milk is ready at all times, at the right temperature, and requires no preparation. . If mother is working, she can express, or pump out the milk into a bottle for a caregiver to feed the baby. If you have an onsite daycare center you can take time to feed the baby when needed.

Breast Feeding… Physical benefit for the mother – Breast feeding releases a hormone that stimulates the uterus to return to it usual condition. Bonding – You begin to enjoy this special bond that you have with your infant. The mother feels more confident in their parenting skills, which increases an infant’s sense of love and security.

In Addition… Children should not be given cow’s milk until they are one year old. Mother’s milk is easier to the baby to digest.

Bottle Feeding A healthful alternative to breast feeding is bottle-feeding. Allows fathers, grandparents and other relatives to share in the work and rewards of feeding the baby. Gives the mother time to rest.

Must sterilize bottle nipples and replace them when they wear out. Bottle-Feeding… Formula – A commercially prepared mixture of milk or milk substitute, water and added nutrients. If an infant appears to be allergic to a cow’s milk formula, the doctor may suggest a soy milk variety. Available ready to use, but can also be a concentrated liquid or powder, which are mixed with boiled or bottled water. Must sterilize bottle nipples and replace them when they wear out.
