Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five

Regarded as one of the founding groups – along with Afrika Bambaataa and Kool Herc – of “old school” rap. Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five was formed in 1977. Flash, born Joseph Saddler in Barbados, began acting as a disc jockey (DJ) at local parties in the 1970s.

Introducing The Furious Five Flash began making a musical collage by playing two or more records at one time and experimenting with “scratching”. Introducing The Furious Five Flash teamed up with fellow DJ’s Cowboy (Keith Wiggins) Melle Mel (Melvin Glover) Kid Creole (Nathaniel Glover) Melle Mel’s brother Mr. Ness (Eddie Morris) Raheim (Guy Williams)

The group became the most popular rap act in New York City They played at many events like; parties, balls, and nightclubs. Soon after the Sugarhill Gang released the first rap hit single “Rappers Delight”, in 1979, Flash and his group signed with Sugarhill Records.

Don't Push me 'cause I'm close to the edge......... The Message The group’s 1982 hit single “The Message”, was released. Don't Push me 'cause I'm close to the edge......... I'm tryin not to lose my head!!! huh huh huh huh!!!!

“The Message” was a starkly poetic look at the nightmares of urban poverty. The song is credited by critics with changing rap’s focus from party music to a forum for social commentary. Today known as, “Conscious Rap”

1984 By 1984 the original group had split up. The group reformed into two separate groups – one by Flash & one by Melle Mel. In 1987 they reunited, and have since toured along with other old school rap artist.
