Introduction Challenge-driven education specialized knowledge be complemented by and built through open-ended, challenge based and interdisciplinary team work typically as student project format. an approach will enable students to bridge the gap between knowledge and societal demands, enabling them to make a contribution to society Train-the-Trainer (workshop in the context of IoT) Engineering Education (future studies on the subject )

Challenge based learning Focus on identification, analysis and design of a solution to a sociotechnical problem. The learning experience is typically multidisciplinary, takes place in an international context and aims to find a collaboratively developed solution which is environmentally, socially and economically sustainable. But does not need to be the fancy and cool course

Challenge Driven Education Approach Project-based learning, meaning that the work is compiled into projects Team-based learning, meaning that learning happens in a team setting Focusing on wicked, open-ended problems that cannot be solved with the existing disciplinary knowledge Involvement of external partners and clients in the projects, whether businesses or public bodies.

Learning is an social activity Learning is often best achieved by solving real-world problems Openness, Interdisciplinary, Technology From building blocks (Traditional app) to thematic blocks (Teach number of concepts under one theme) An innovative approach to assessments

Assessment of Challenge based learning Assessment is different compared with traditional education In challenge based learning settings, assessment of knowledge and skills are most often integrated and continuous throughout the project This is different from traditional courses where students hand in assignment and perform on a final exam Students knowledge and skills are very visible It is crucial as a teacher / supervisor / facilitator to perform an open environment where students feel that they can try, fail and improve with out being judged Feed back are crucial: From teachers, peers and stakeholders an in self assessment

TTA and Challenge Driven Education September 2016 Dar es Salaam ( COSTECH ) , Tanzania, Development Open Science Platform with focus on integrating the knowledge triangle and providing Science Gateways: TTA PORTAL Introducing a new approach for societal stakeholder integration through the CDE model and TTA supporting a comprehensive multi-partner interaction. Physically co-locating the activities to university initiated co-creation, co-design, and co-drafting centers forming the local Open Labs and Maker Space meeting places

Process for Open Lab in KTH / Stockholm Identify, analyze and present context and target group Relate scientific perspectives to different practices Develop, plan and evaluate new innovation ideas Apply interactive and creative work and design methodology Visualize and shape innovation projects through sketches, models and prototypes Identify and analyze complex phenomena and present new innovation ideas that can be developed and implemented to be of lasting use and value for a specific target group Design an organization for multidisciplinary project co-operation Handle problems that are incompletely specified by making reasonable assumptions Be able to communicate orally and in writing

Key factors for success for CDE Planning the course : purpose and expected outcome Start from where you are not from zero Choosing appropriate project lasts for high motivation and creativity Having methods for organizing and managing projects Setting and coaching teams Clear assessment and grading procedures

Framework to Support the CDE Transfer learning to more student centric from teacher centric Provide a framework for intended learning outcomes such that curricula can be compared or to be made more equivalent independent of specific implementation details Provide similarity across disciplines so that interdisciplinary course content can be integrated to disciplinary oriented curricula.

CDE Fostering Frugal Innovation and IoT Frugal Innovation is the process of reducing the complexity and cost of a good and its production IoT needs frugal innovation if it wants to live up to its promise of connecting billions of devices and helping people improve their lives. Summary of Innovation through CDE Problems are defined by the external stakeholders addressing real life problems and challenges with truly open ended formulation. Problems may have a multidisciplinary character resulting the need to co-locate students to new environments The students will be exposed to peer learning in addition of team work skills and project management issues through interaction with other students hopefully with different discipline background. Needs for resources to initiate, develop and maintain Community of Practices and Knowledge Management of Science Gateways
