Hawai’i THE NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION (NSF) is the only federal agency whose mission includes support for all fields of fundamental science and engineering. BY THE NUMBERS Hawai’i in FY 2016 $46 Million: NSF funds awarded 30th: National ranking in NSF funds 6: NSF-funded institutions 118: NSF grants awarded 2: NSF research centers/facilities “The University of Hawai'i is committed to continuing to accelerate the growth of our research activities. Our goal is to anchor and support the emergence of a billion dollar innovation and research sector in Hawai'i.” − Randy Moore, Vice Chair of University of Hawaii Board of Regents EXAMPLES OF NSF-FUNDED RESEARCH IN HAWAI’I Researchers at University of Hawai’i at Manoa and Hilo are investigating coral health and diseases on reefs around Hawai’i and have launched an interactive web-based map, called the Coral Health Atlas, to provide access to coral and ecosystem health data. NSF funded the development of super sensors for astronomy applications at the University of Hawai’i Institute for Astronomy in collaboration with Teledyne Scientific and Imaging, LLC. These 16 megapixel infrared sensors will be used to develop the largest detector array and mosaic camera in the world, which will allow capturing of high resolution astronomical images. NSF's Ocean Drilling Program funded a research project at the University of Hawai’i to collect 3-D seismic data that reveal the structure of crust below the Pacific seafloor. The results of this project allow geoscientists to detect earthquake and Tsunami hotspots. Hawai’i Since 1952, NSF has supported nearly 50,000 graduate students through research fellowships. Hawai’i received $9 million in NSF educational funding in FY 2016. THE NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION (NSF) not only funds cutting-edge research at institutions across the country; NSF’s education initiatives ensure the U.S. will remain a global leader in innovation for generations to come. EXAMPLES OF NSF-FUNDED EDUCATION PROGRAMS IN HAWAI’I The Chaminade University Kûlia project prepares Hawaiian and Pacific Islander scientists using innovative educational approaches, with a focus on "big data" and indigenous knowledge, to lead the development of practical and policy-based solutions to regional challenges. The Hawai’i P-20 Partnerships for Education collaborated with the state’s Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR) to engage middle- and high-school students in STEM-related activities, including hands-on experiments, robotic programs, field trips and problem-solving team projects. The Research Experience for Undergraduates program at the University of Hawai'i at Hilo partners with researchers, federal agencies and the Pacific Internship Programs for Exploring Science to provide research experience in conservation biology to 10 undergraduate interns every year and prepare them for a future in science.
