BIG PICTURE WWII: From 1939 - 1945 Major Players: Allies = O:) USA + England + France + Russia + Poland Axis = >:( Germany + Japan + Italy Lives Lost: WW 1: 15 Million died WW 2: 60 million died (11 million in Concentration camps) Begins; and Ends: Europe: Germany invades Poland; Russia/USA invade Germany Asia: Japan bombs Pearl Harbor; USA atomic bombs Japan

I. Background & Causes: A) Great Depression - Sadly, wars create jobs. Unemployment rate: -1940 - 15% -1943 - 2% B) Treaty of Versailles - ended WW1 by blaming war on Germany + owed $30B + crippled them economically for 20 years -Also created Poland -Said Germany could not expand again → Germany was fed up with this, will fight back

From Neutral to Ally Neutrality Acts 1935 - could not sell arms to nations at war Why? tired from WW1 + did not ever get paid back Cash & Carry 1939 - after Axis forms (J/G/I), FDR allows arms sales to allies for cash only if they carry (ship it) themselves Lend-Lease 1941 - Lend 50 battleships for 99 year lease in UK naval bases. Atlantic Charter 1941 - Allies (USA/GB) goals for the post War (disarmament of aggressive nations & end of territorial expansion) Embargo on Japan 1941 - no more oil/trade, will spark attack at Pearl Harbor
