Bellwork 11/9/15 How might a person behave when he feels superior to others? How might countries act in a similar fashion?

Essential Question EQ: How was the United States driven to be an imperialistic nation? I will analyze the major factors that drove the United States to imperialism and choose which factor had the biggest influence on the policy.

America Claims an Empire: Imperialism Beginning in 1867 and continuing through the century, global competition caused the US to expand. During this time the US acquired Hawaii and Alaska (they both became states in 1959).

Admiral Alfred T. Mahan Most outspoken advocate of US military expansion. Wanted the US to expand its navy to compete with other countries.

America Acquires New Land Alaska purchased in 1867 for $7.2 million. Ended up being rich in oil, minerals The United States annexes Hawaii in 1898. Pearl Harbor refueling station American ships
