OVERVIEW & EVENT PLANNING INTRODUCTION EVENT DURATION In 2017, Daekyo America will be piloting its first speech contest, the Eye Level Oratacular. The speech contest will be conducted first at the flagship centers in the spring, and then held as a nationwide, in-center event (similar to the Literary Award) in late spring / early summer for franchisees to host if they choose. The contest will promote public speaking abilities and guide students to understand the difference between constructing essays and speeches. EVENT DATE April - June 2017 ※Specific event date can be set individually by center (Video recording submission date: June 19th) PARTICIPANTS Eye Level and Non-Eye Level Students REGISTRATION FEE None EVENT DURATION Set by center (dependent upon number of participants) Suggested time for each speech: 3 minutes for younger students 3 - 5 minutes for older students

OVERVIEW & EVENT PLANNING AWARD TIMELINE It is suggested to group students by age/grade level to prevent judging 1st or 2nd graders against middle school participants. Consider having 2 or 3 age groups. For Example: 1st – 3rd & 4th – 8th 1st – 2nd, 3 – 5th & 6th – 8th Be aware, the more age groups made, the more winning prizes you will need. Daekyo America will provide a participation prize for each participating student. ※ Note Daekyo America will be providing a participation prize but not an award or prize for event winners in your center. However, this event will tie into Eye Level‘s global Model UN event. Please see separate document for details. Inform parents and students of the speech event Begin enrolling students into the competition Create Facebook event TIMELINE April Registered participants select topic Provide Outline Template & Rehearsal Guide Prior to event, set time to review and provide feedback on participants speeches (optional) May Event Date (May or June) Host event in center and reward participants for hard work Submit video recording of selected student’s speech to HQ (3rd – 6th grade) June 19th

OVERVIEW & EVENT PLANNING SPEECH CONTEST - EVENT STAGES Listed below is the outline of the stages of this event. Registered participants receive topic for speeches Outline Template for constructing speeches is provided along with the Rehearsal Guidelines After completing the outline, participants begin to construct speeches at home Participants submit written speeches for grading and feedback (Optional) Participants make revisions to speech Encourage participants to rehearse speeches at home while considering the Rehearsal Guidelines Set date outside of class time for participants to come to the center and practice their speech and receive guidance and feedback (Optional) Event Day – students are assigned a presentation order and deliver their speeches to invited parents and other participants ※Eye Level students can work on their outline and speeches during their English classes (steps 2, 3 and/or 4) if so desired, but do not have to do so. Their speech can be created entirely at home.

MATERIALS SPEECH TOPIC The topic for this year’s speech contest is “A Favorite Place in My Country” The students can speak on a favorite place they have visited A place they want to visit but haven’t yet A place in the country of great importance or historical significance Or anything else that falls under the theme of A Favorite Place in My Country

MATERIALS SPEECH OUTLINE TEMPLATE This is a template to provide to participants It gives them a starting point when beginning their speeches Start laying out the structure and main points The outline serves a similar purpose as the graphic organizers in the lower level writing booklets—get the creative process started and organize thoughts

MATERIALS TIPS FOR WRITING YOUR SPEECH Writing a speech is different in a few ways from writing an essay Students have been learning at Eye Level the composition process of essay writing but not speech writing This document explains the key differences between the two It provides suggestions and tips for the participants to consider when writing and revising their speeches

MATERIALS REHEARSAL GUIDELINES Public speaking is not an easy task for many This guide serves to explain the importance of rehearsing prior to the event in front of someone It also explains what to think about when reciting the speech Body language Intonation Pronunciation and Pacing Time limits/expectations

MATERIALS JUDGING GUIDE This document will provide a system by which you can grade and critique the participants’ speeches It will focus on points that were explained to students in their Rehearsal Guide (timing, body language, pronunciation, pacing…) Select your judges well in advance and let them know the expectations of the role (could be yourself, instructors, city council representatives, volunteer parents, etc.) To save time during the contest, have the judges mark the sections on the judging sheet during the speech, but have someone else tally the points

MARKETING THE EVENT EVENT FLYER A flyer has been created and uploaded onto the ORL Distribute to current students and families Give extra copies for current students to give to friends Display at local libraries and community centers

MARKETING THE EVENT CREATE A FACEBOOK EVENT Create an event on Facebook for your speech contest. The event will include the date and time the participants will give their speech at your center. Include any relevant information so that anyone interested can contact your center to learn more. Once you have created your event, inform your regional office and include a link to the event. Daekyo America will help you promote the event by boosting it in your area. To create your Facebook event, follow the steps on the next few pages.

EVENT PREP PREPARING CONTEST AREA Speaking Area Have a designated area set for the speaker It is not necessary for it be a raised “stage” or for it to have a podium Distractions in this area should be limited Too much behind or around the speaker could distract the listeners Participant Area Speech participants should not be seated with parents in the audience Have a separate seating area designated for the participants This will make it feel more formal, as well as encourage all participants and listeners to stay through the entire event Audience Area Chairs for the audience should be set up with comfortable room to move in and out Facing the speaker and participants The number of audience members attending the event should be known in advance to make set up easier Require RSVP and/or an Oratacular “ticket” to attend event to ensure no problems arise Can have a refreshment table prepared with water and finger snacks If this is done, be sure to encourage audience to remain seated during speeches

EVENT PREP PREPARING SPEECH ORDER Participant Arrival Tell participants to arrive at a set registration time Give participants a name tag with name and number (or just number) The number will be the order in which participants give their speeches Participants will sit in the participation area based on their number Commencement Once participants and audience members are seated, main speaker welcomes and thanks all for attending Recognize all speech participants on their hard work and preparation Explain how the event will run Call up first participant (should select someone older/confident to start event—can be tough to go first) Main Speaker Role Someone from your staff should be designated as the main speaker for the event Along with starting the event, they will introduce and call up each participant (or students can proceed one after another on their own based on number) The main speaker will conclude the event by congratulating all of the participants on their public speaking achievement and thanking the audience for attending The center may want to award the selected winners at the conclusion of the event or may decide to hold an award ceremony on a different date
