Third Grade Part 2 Review Matter and Energy

Name 3 physical properties of rocks. After a student answers, ask the class some more properties of rocks. Are they magnetic, do they float, etc.

Is the data in the graph correct? Object Sink or Float Magnetic cork float no clay sink paper clip yes ping pong ball After they answer the question, discuss other objects that can sink, can float, are attracted to magnets. Does anyone remember what types of material usually floats? (wood, plastic) Could we get the clay to float? How? What types of materials usually sinks? (metals, coins, etc) What kind of material is magnetic?

Name the 3 states of matter and give an example of each.

Which state or states of matter can take the shape of a container Which state or states of matter can take the shape of a container? solid liquid gas After someone answers, ask for examples.

Which state or states of matter has a definite shape? solid liquid gas After someone answers, ask for examples.

Which state or states of matter can be poured into a container Which state or states of matter can be poured into a container? solid liquid gas After someone answers, ask for examples.

Which state or states of matter can be melted? solid liquid gas After a student answers the question, ask the following. Is heat added or taken away?

Which state or states of matter can lose heat and can condense into a liquid? solid liquid gas After someone answers, ask for examples.

At a restaurant, a waitress wipes a table with a wet cloth At a restaurant, a waitress wipes a table with a wet cloth. In a few minutes, the table is dry. Explain why? Discuss other examples of evaporation. Ask them what is needed for evaporation to take place. (heat)

What has to happen to the water in the pond so that the girl can ice skate? After someone answers, ask “Does heat need to be added or taken away for water to freeze?”

The dew on the morning grass and the water drops on the mirror after a hot bath are examples of ________________. After someone answers, ask if heat is added or taken away.

What do you get when you pour milk into your cereal? After the question is answered, ask for more examples of mixtures. What is a mixture?

What would be the best way to separate a mixture of sugar and candy without eating it? After student answers a filter or a colander, discuss other ways to separate mixtures. When would you use a magnet to separate a mixture? When would you use water to separate a mixture? When would you evaporate to separate a mixture?

What causes changes in matter? After someone answers energy, ask them the 4 types of energy they learned.

What form or forms of energy will make the ball bounce? After someone answers, ask for some more examples of mechanical energy?

What three forms of energy does a microwave produce? Light, heat, sound

What form of energy do all the pictures have in common?

True or False: Heat always travels from a cooler object to a warmer object. False. Have students give you examples of hotter objects transferring heat to colder objects. Cuddling with your mom when you are cold. Putting your hands in front of the fire. Touching something hot.

Sound is made by ____________ matter? Vibrating. Have them hold their throats and hum again.

Which form of energy helps plants grow and make food? After someone answers light, ask what else light energy does.

Which flashlight would have to be on to create the shadow? After someone answers D, ask them what forms the shadow, the light or the object.
