Authorities use within Catalog: Subject, Author, Title Headings in bib records

Authority Control Sets Admin > Server Administration > Authorities >Control Sets Create a New Control Set with a Name & Description Can create custom control sets

Thesauri Tells Evergreen what information in MARC record subject headings match with what Control Set. MARC subfield = Thesaurus Code Create New Thesaurus: Fill in Code, Name and Description, & Select Control Set

Authority Fields Define the fields that are in your authority records.

After Creating A New Authority Field Will need to add 1) Control Bib Field and 2) Axes

Control Set Bib Field Tells what authority field may appear in what MARC record tag.

Axes How to map between the field on the authority record side and ‘browse catalog’ on the catalog side. Create New Browse Authority-Axis Field Map: Select Axis

Axis Management Admin > Server Administration > Authorities > Browse Axes

Manage Record Authorities Cataloging > Manage Authorities 1) Enter Authorities search term 2) Select Authority Type from dropdown 3) Click ‘Submit’ 1) 2) 3)

Manage Record Authorities Ability to Edit, Delete, and Merge Record Authorities individually

Applying Existing Authority Records to a Bib Record Existing Bib Record: Within Bib Record, Actions For This Item > MARC Edit View New Bib Record: Apply as one catalogs. Within the MARC Record, Click Validate to show unlinked controlled fields.

Can also “Create New Authority from this Field.” Select field and right-click to cause authority record options to appear. Can also “Create New Authority from this Field.” Options: Create Immediately or Create and Edit

Select which Authority record to use Apply Selected or Apply Fully Authority (1XX)

Full Authority (Applied & with linked subfield)

Planning a batch authority control project — questions Are there already authority records in the database? If so, do you care about them? Is there other work worth tacking on to the project? Exporting and reloading all of your bib records can be time consuming, so adding on additional data changes (e.g., RDA enrichment) can make sense Deduplication?

Selecting records to export “Nearly everything” Exceptions can include Brief acquisitions records Brief circulation records Brief records for paperbacks Electronic resource records that get reloaded anyway Deleted records
