BOOTP The Bootstrap Protocol (BOOTP) From 1985 It is a client/server protocol. BOOTP, is a static configuration protocol. Here a table is developed which have static IP addresses for each physical address. When a client requests its IP address, the BOOTP server consults a table that matches the physical address of the client with its IP address.

DHCP Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol from 1993 It is a method for assigning Internet Protocol (IP) addresses permanently or temporary to individual computers in an organization’s network. DHCP assign automatically a new IP address when a computer is plugged into the network

Two types of IP Addresses DHCP is used to assign IP addresses to hosts or workstations on the network Two types of IP addresses: Static The permanent IP address assigned to a computer is called static IP address Dynamic The temporary IP address is called a dynamic IP address

Why DHCP is Important Important when it comes to adding a machine to a network When computer requests an address, the administrator would have to manually configure the machine (i.e. in BOOTP) Mistakes are easily made Causes difficulty for both administrator as well as for other computers on the network DHCP solves all the trouble of manually adding a machine to a network

How does DHCP work? When a client needs to start up TCP/IP operations, it broadcasts a request for address information The DHCP server will assign an IP address to the client as shown in the figure. The client can extend its lease (Time period) or can also released if the IP address if not require and will be then assigned to another client on the network

How does DHCP work?

Advantages DHCP minimizes the administrative burden By using DHCP there is no chance to conflict IP address.

Disadvantages Some machines on your network need to be at fixed addresses, for example servers and routers When DHCP server is unavailable, client is unable to access enterprises network You need to be able to assign a machine to run the DHCP server continually as it must be available at all times when clients need IP access
