Similarities and Differences about Bhangra Dance and Hip-Hop Dance Originates from India, Punjab. Was performed mostly during a successful harvest. Bhangra dance is performed on the day of Baisakhi. Bhangra dance includes a performance of lyrics called Boliyaan and Loriyaan and the dhol drum is beaten. Dancers perform by going round drummers. Drummers beat the drums using two sticks and lift them to summon dancers to move in a rhythm.

Bhangra Dance

Drummers and Dhol

Costumes in Bhangra A bright colored Patka worn on the dancer’s head (Schreffler 390). It is referred to as a lungi and lacha for men and women respectively. Dancers also wear a long tunic. There are also waistcoats in either dark blue or black. Dancers also wear traditional anklets referred to as ghungroos

Bhangra Costumes

Hip-Hop Dance Hip-hop dance is over 30 years old. The first dance crews were created in the 1970’s. Hip hop dance came from different cultures like rock, tap, jazz and Latino and American cultures. It is an energetic form of dance (Hazzard-Donald 510). Hip hop dance moves include breaking, popping and locking. Hip hop dance moves are mostly free styles. Hip hop styles like breaking started in New York while fun styles began in California (Hazzard-Donald 510)

Hip-Hop Dance

Similarities Both dances require coordination and rhythm. There is a technique to hip hop and Bhangra. Dancers use energy. There are outfits worn to every dance. There are a lot of stunts including arm/leg work.

Differences Bhangra Originated from jazz and ballet but hip hop breaks these rules since it came from tap, rock, jazz and different cultures. Bhangra was invented from Punjabi while hip hop in western country. Costumes in Bhangra and hip hop are made from different material. Hip hop is the most popular dance in US and Europe and comprises of flexibility, increased level of technique, unpredicted rhythm changes, techniques and direction. It is an energetic dance, it incorporates fast movements, skills and coordination. On the other hand, Bhangra is a form of folk dance performed at coming of spring. It is usually accompanied by a dhol. Bhangra is slow or fast paced. Dancers wear colorful outfits. There is lots of energy and team coordination.
