If you haven’t turned in the Brochure, we’ll meet to discuss Reality assignment due today. Turn in whatever you finish. LAST DAILY GRADE Students have enjoyed this enrichment activity in the past… I hope you do as well Pick up from my desk. Can you afford… you?? This assignment will teach you how to budget a monthly income for all the items you need & want. Each paper is 25% of your last daily grade. Turn in to the tray when complete.

Food Expense Sheet Fill in your daily meals & drinks for a week. This should be detailed!! Breakfast: Cereal, milk Lunch: Sandwich (turkey, cheese, mayo, bread), Chips, Dr. Pepper Snacks: Goldfish, juice Dinner: Pizza, water Make a Grocery List Should be a WEEKLY list. Ex: 1 box of cereal for the week should be enough Ex: 1 gallon of milk could last 2 weeks. Consider this when totaling monthly $$ Price each item This requires YOU to research prices on items you have at home. Internet or go to the store yourself. Parents should be your LAST RESOURCE… as that defeats the purpose of you being independent Total up your entire grocery bill and multiply by the appropriate number per item. Write your TOTAL MONTHLY GROCERY $$ in the provided space at the bottom.

Extra Expenses Spreadsheet Use your current expenses (what you or parents currently pay for) to create a list of your monthly extra needs. Some items are monthly, bi-weekly, or weekly. Answer this based on the last and future 2 months of your life. This isn’t about what you WILL do when on your own… but what you ARE doing in your current situation. Price them so you have a Total Monthly Cost.

Home & Transportation Expense Spreadsheet Home Expenses Requires effort on your part in researching online. 1st decide on a location to move to based on plans after high school. Decide if you want to rent a 1 bedroom apartment on your own or a 2 bedroom apartment with another person. (disregard the mortgage opt) Apartments.com, Apartmentfinder.com, etc… Insurance companies (some offer free quotes… do NOT pay for anything!) Utilities may not be exact, but you should be able to find estimates. Transportation Expenses Decide what type of transportation makes sense based on home location and work/school location, after high school. (bike, bus, car/suv/truck, etc…) Cars.com, Edmunds.com, Carmax.com…etc… Gas can be calculated based on what is current. You will have to determine how many times a month you have to fill up. Parents/Adults are your LAST RESOURCE for this assignment.

Monthly Income Budget See here for changes Pick one of the jobs you used for your 3 Job Search assignment Go to Indeed.com and find the average Gross Income (annual salary) for that position. This is the amount you will use for the Tax Bracket information. Use the 2015 tax year.

College Reality Find the cost of the college/trade school you want to attend. Try to use the actual college website 15 hours = 5 classes; 12 hours = 4 classes. Per semester (fall/spring) 8 semesters = 4 years (for Medical or Law school you’ll have to add more) Cost of tuition is either by semester or year… find out. Write down your TOTAL COLLEGE cost… for ALL years attended. Student Loans: finaid.org Click on Calculators and College Projector. Then go back to calculators for the Loan Calculator Enter your total college amount in the Loan Amount box. Do not change/enter anything else!!! Write down your monthly loan payment?

Reality Reflection To be done on your own paper For each section below write 3-5 sentences explaining what you personally learned from your research. Food Extras Home Transportation Taxes (2 sentences) Monthly Income Job Opportunities (for recent high school graduates) Do you think you are ready to be independent? Explain. Turn this in with your Reality papers
