Where to Start PRAY!!! What are you looking for? What questions do you have about the text before you read? Why are you studying? What are you looking for? Truth revealed by Scripture? Your opinion to be backed up?

Thinking about the Text Obadiah What do you know about this book right now? What questions do you have before you read? Context?

Learning from the Text Obadiah Read the text What’s the simplest thing this verse tells me? What’s the passage/chapter/book pointing to? Direct statements?

Learning from the Text Obadiah Who is it too? What does it say to/about them? What history does the text talk about? What does the text say about the culture, events, & other parts of the Bible? Why was the book written?

Occasion & Purpose: Obadiah Data Collection Vs. 1 – God is speaking to Edom (S) Vs. 1- Judgment is coming (I) Vs. 2 – Judgment is against Edom (I) Vs. 3 – Edom had a pride problem (S) Vs. 7 – Edom’s neighbors are preparing for war (I) Vs. 10 – Judgment is because of their relationship with Israel (S & I) Vs. 11- Edom didn’t help Israel when needed (S) Vs. 15 – Because they’ve acted bad, bad things will happen to them (S) Etc….

Occasion & Purpose: Obadiah Summary Paragraph Obadiah had a vision about the Kingdom of Edom, who descended from Esau, Jacob’s brother, therefore are Israel’s “cousins.” God is not happy with how they’ve acted, how they’ve treated their cousins, nor with how they aren’t paying attention to Him. God is planning to send armies to destroy Edom. The purpose of this book is to announce God’s judgment against Edom.
