The bear originally called Edward bear was renamed Winnie after a brown bear in London Zoo. She had been the mascot of a Canadian regiment in the World War the First.
Earnest Shepard’s illustrations to «Winnie-the-Pooh»
During the war the toys went to America and there they have been ever since. In 1987 they were donated to the New York Public Library. They are on a display in a special climate-controlled case.
