TIGER VII (T2O) PROJECT OVERVIEW TIGER VII (T2O) PROJECT GOALS Improve service efficiencies and effectiveness, customer service and the ability to coordinate and communicate with first responders and other human service agency’s. Eliminate base to vehicle communication gaps by improving broadband access and updating scheduling/dispatching software and hardware technology. Office of Transit

TIGER VII (T2O) PROJECT OVERVIEW TIGER VII (T2O) Project Need The lack of sufficient broadband or cellular service presents a wide array of communication barriers for Ohio’s 34 Rural Transit Systems. Some areas are affected more significantly than others which impacts access to: Jobs Education Health Care Emergency Services Office of Transit

TIGER VII (T2O) PROJECT OVERVIEW TIGER VII (T2O) Project Purpose The project will provide funding to install the hardware and/or equipment (utilizing existing structures where available) to expand broadband where regional connectivity gaps exist. The State developed a set of scheduling/dispatching software and hardware minimum standard technology criteria. This set of minimum standards will be used to ensure all rural transit systems have the technology to meet the goals of this project Office of Transit

AREAS WITH INSUFFICIENT BROADBAND Office of Transit

TIGER VII (T2O) PROJECT PARTNERS ODOT Partnerships– ODOT – identified facility locations Local Entities – provided coordinates of available facilities such as water towers, fire station towers, sheriff’s tower, etc. DAS MARCS Towers – DAS determining available sites based on original funding source DAS Real Estate Office – developing list of State property ODNR – identifying favorable sites (i.e. State Parks, etc) Office of Transit

TIGGER VII (T2O) MOBILE CONNECTIVITY Conduct Drive Tests – Connect Ohio First – Find out what broadband service is available (service/no service) Second – Determine how good the coverage is (upload/download/latency) Three – Using the data collected, prepare maps showing actual coverage by broadband carrier (Verizon, T-Mobile, Sprint, AT&T) Drove over 19K miles Obtained phones from all 4 broadband carriers Conducted testing every ¼ mile Office of Transit

TIGGER VII (T2O) MOBILE CONNECTIVITY Results Not all gaps are gaps Adding external antenna’s can increase reception One carrier may not cover area but another does Possible solution – mobile broadband router Increasing installation sites will help with expansion Office of Transit
