Interactive Student Notebooks to the Rescue! Franeka Colley, Ed.S Gwinnett County School System

Circle Map Circle maps allows students a chance to show what they know about a topic, kind of like a brain dump. Complete the Circle Map on INTERACTIVE NOTEBOOKS. Only write what you know about them inside the bigger circle. Interactive Notebooks

Have you ever heard teachers say... This is too much paper for this folder! I HATE work samples! I don’t have time to collect work samples! The papers keep falling out! I’m so DONE with Special Ed! I don’t know how to keep up with all of this data? There HAS to be a better way! My planning is only 30 minutes!

It’s a One Stop Shop...grades AND progress monitoring!

What is the traditional purpose of an Interactive Notebook? “Interactive notebooks are used for class notes as well as for other activities where students are asked to express their own ideas and process the information presented in class.”

What is the modified purpose of an Interactive Notebook? Still used to take notes and complete assignments Helps students stay organized They are used to track progress on IEP Goals and/or objectives Teachers gain immediate access to what the student knows Instant permanent products for data collection Students get prompt feedback for improvement Helps students take an active part in implementing their IEP with fidelity Parents are able to track progress without waiting for the progress report No more clutter!

Foldable Time! Left Vs. Right Shutter Foldable Fold your paper in half (hamburger). Unfold Fold the outside edges to the center crease, so that the text is visible on the outside. This will go on pg. 5

Right vs. Left Left brain controls the right side Right brain controls the left side

Left Side vs. Right Side The Left side is “left” for students. This is the side that students can use to complete assignments, anchor their learning and complete progress monitoring activities The Right side is “Restricted” and contains information that was given by the teacher 14

Right Side Teacher-led info *What they have to know!* Class notes Handouts with new information Graphic organizers Vocabulary Foldables ANYTHING you give them (Odd Pages)

Left Side Student-led info *What they have to show!* Drawings Graphic organizers Cartoons Maps Charts and graphs Work Samples Progress Monitoring Probes EVERYTHING you want them to do (Even Pages) Left Side Student-led info *What they have to show!* 16

Notebooks become a portfolio of individual learning Students make them personal Students take ownership Students can see their growth Students have a log for their learning

Progress Monitoring Which goals and objectives can be monitored with Interactive Notebooks? MOST Academic Goals: Math, Reading Comprehension, Reading Fluency and Written Expression Organization Study Skills Behavior Goals??? Data sheets could be housed in the back of the notebook for easy tracking of the goals. If you want to add behavior data sheets here as well, that could help reduce the clutter.

Drawbacks and Solutions

Quickwrite/Quickdraw Think about a student, teacher or spouse who had difficulty getting organized. Write a few sentences or draw a picture showing how they could have been helped by using Interactive Notebooks.
