What are SATs? Statutory Assessment tests which all pupils take at the end of Key Stage two. They provide a snapshot of attainment in English and Maths. The tests will take place week beginning Monday 12th May 2014. We are expecting that the children will achieve a Level 4/5+ in the tests. Some children will sit the new Level 6 papers.

The English Tests There are 3 parts: Reading EGPS Writing

Writing Test Writing is now teacher assessed using a range of the children’s writing during the year The children will complete a long and short writing test We moderate within school and other local schools

Key Stage 2 English grammar, punctuation and spelling test What is the English grammar, punctuation and spelling test? The English grammar, punctuation and spelling test assesses your child’s English skills in four key areas in Year 6: spelling punctuation grammar; and vocabulary. It forms part of the National Curriculum tests (NCTs) which are taken by pupils at the end of Key Stage 2.

Why does my child have to take this test? The Department for Education introduced the test because they want to make sure that when children leave primary school they are confident in grammar, punctuation and spelling. The test will ensure that primary schools place a stronger focus on the teaching of these skills than in previous years.

The end of Key Stage 2 is a key point of a child’s education, and we expect parents to want to know how well their child is learning the most important skills. Just as you will receive information from your child’s school about how they perform in reading and maths, you will also receive information about how they are doing in grammar, punctuation and spelling.

The test results will provide teachers with useful information about your child’s progress in each of the key areas. Most children will move to a secondary school the following term, and their new English teachers can use this information to focus their lessons on areas of need.

The Mathematic Tests There are three tests - test A - test B - mental arithmetic Test A and B have 40 marks each Mental arithmetic has 20 marks There is no CALCULATOR paper – reasons why?

Kerrie and Karen each bought identical T-shirts from the same shop. Kerrie bought hers on Monday when there was 15% off the original price. Karen bought hers when there was 20% off the original price. Kerrie paid 70p more! What was the original price?

This is a good example of a level 6 question because the calculations involved are not particularly extensive yet require an ability to think clearly. The key is to recognise that the 70p represents 5% of the original price. ( 20%-15%). Once you have this you can see that, then it is a short step to find 10% of the original price £1.40. (double 5%) So the original price must be £14.00

The two facts are that angles in an equilateral triangle are all 60˚ The angles in a quadrilateral add to 360˚. From here it is relatively simple to calculate angle x. 360 – (60+60+108) = 228

Teacher Assessment Teacher assessment results are reported alongside the test results. Both have equal status and provide complementary information about a pupils attainment. However it is usually SATs that are reported/quoted

Preparing for the tests at home. Research has shown that children who achieve Level 4 at the end of Key Stage two will gain the expected five GCSEs with grades A-C at the end of Key Stage three.

Ways to Help at Home Help your child learn their multiplication tables Read with your child at every opportunity Help your child learn their multiplication tables Encourage them to use educational games on the computer (see websites) Talk about their learning Go through some practice papers together (but not in test week!) Complete homework set from week 3

Encourage them to do their best! During the test week please make sure your child: -gets enough sleep -eats breakfast -comes to school with a mid morning snack and water bottle -Is encouraged. You cannot FAIL the SATs!
