Daily Routines Doors open at 8:45am Morning bell at 8:55am and register will start School reading books and reading records should be brought into school every day. P.E is on a Thursday morning. Children should have 2 kits in school (indoor and outdoor). Swimming will commence in the Spring term and PE kits will need to be brought in from then. - Drop off and collection arrangements PE - Toast and Milk

Snacks Milk and toast is available to purchase via Parent Pay. All other snacks you wish your child to have should be provided from home. Healthy snacks only please and water as a drink during the day.

Class Rules Each class has worked together to create their own class rules and expectations based on the schools Golden Rules. These can be seen in each class. Children earn dojo points for following the rules which are converted to housepoints at the end of each week and go towards the housepoint totals announced in Friday’s celebration assembly. Reading At home Please bring book bags daily. Please sign the reading diary to show that your child has read – a quick ‘book read’ or ‘read to p.7’ is fine. Question your child about what they have read. In school Children will read with a teacher or Teaching Assistant once a week. They will complete a variety of activities based on a text/extract or poem each week.

Guided Reading Monday Teacher led class read and answering questions about the text Tuesday and Wednesday Teacher and Teaching Assistant reading with an individual group. Friday Silent reading to build up stamina and Teacher led Cracking Comprehension session.

Importance of reading daily… Access to increased vocabulary – helps writing. Visual recognition of words – proofreading own writing, editing work, spelling words. Increased stamina when reading independently. Maths – Being able to independently read word problems. Following written guidance during independent activities.

Grammar Year 4 Key terminology

Grammar During the week children will be exposed to a selection of grammar activities.

Writing Genres - children will experience a variety of genres e.g. persuasive writing, adventure stories, report writing, poetry, newspaper articles, non - chronological reports. In order for the children to understand the structure of said texts, class novels and home reading books at an appropriate level will help further children’s understanding.

Writing Expectations I can use some of the diagonal and horizontal strokes I need to join letters and know which letters, when they are next to one another, are best left unjoined. I can proof-read my writing for spelling and use of punctuation. I can use paragraphs to organise my writing so that blocks of text flow and ideas are grouped together. I can use an adverb phrase at the start of a sentence e.g. Later that day, I heard the bad news. I can use inverted commas and other punctuation to indicate direct speech. I can draft and rewrite work, that creates settings, characters and plots that excite the reader by using my best vocabulary and I can adapt my work depending on the audience.

Examples of writing…

Mathematics Calculation Policy IN year 4 children are moving towards more standardised methods of calculations. We will be moving towards column methods of addition and subtraction. We will also be using grid method for multiplication and intro some colonial multiplication methods too. Division strategies – rely on chunking but once children have a secure knowledge of their times tables – can intro bus stop method.

Medicines We can administer prescription medicines that are required for more than 3 times a day, on some occasions we will administer medicines that are required 3 times a day – you will need to complete a form at the office If your child is too unwell for school, please telephone (not email or text as these are not monitored) the school office before 9am as any unexplained absence will be followed up by the school office 48 hour sickness / diarrhoea rule Please update your class teachers on any medical issues (i.e. asthma etc.) Individual Health Care Plans will be drawn up between parents and school for a child with any significant medical needs
