Simple Machines Notes.
A simple machine is a device that helps reduce the amount of force required to do work. Work is done when a force (effort force) is applied over a distance.
Work and Simple Machines. Work Work means to (1) apply a force to an object over a distance, and (2) the object moves in response to the force. If something.
Chapter 7 Review.
Simple Machines A simple machine is a device that can multiply a force or change the direction of a force.
Simple Machines There are 6 basic types. 1 - INCLINED PLANE An inclined plane is a flat, sloped surface How it works: *It increases distance and decreases.

Study Guide Answers when a force is applied to an object and the object moves a distance measures force in Newtons (N) or weight in grams (G) or pounds (lbs) Newtons (N) or grams (G)/pounds (lbs) A device that helps reduce the amount of force required to do work. Lever, Pulley, Inclined Plane, Wheel and Axle EFFORT A lever is a rigid bar that is free to move around a fixed point, called a fulcrum. A fulcrum is the point on which a lever rests or is supported and on which it pivots. 1) Increase the distance between the fulcrum & where the effort force/input force is applied OR 2) Decrease the distance of the weight from the fulcrum

EQ: How can a pulley be used to reduce the amount of FORCE required to do work?

Lesson Importance: WHY? Why do you need to know: How can a pulley be used to reduce the amount of FORCE required to do work? Think… Tell your group your answer. Write your answer on Nearpod.

Pulley A pulley is a grooved wheel W/ a rope running along the groove. Pulleys change: (1) the amount of force applied/EFFORT & (2) the direction of the force applied. Copy diagram and labels

STOP What 2 things do pulleys change? Write your answer on your I-pad/board & flip it. (1) the amount of force applied/EFFORT & (2) the direction of the force applied.

3 types of pulleys (1) Moveable pulleys: not attached & reduces the EFFORT Ex: construction cranes, block & tackle systems copy (1) Moveable pulleys: not attached & reduces the EFFORT Ex: construction cranes, block & tackle systems copy illustration and labels

STOP What is a moveable pulley? Write the definition on your I-pad/board & flip it. a pulley not attached & reduces the EFFORT

(2) Fixed pulley: attached to a structure & reduces EFFORT EX: flag pole, blinds Copy illustration

STOP What is a fixed pulley? Write the definition on your I-pad/board & flip it. attached to a structure & reduces EFFORT

(3) Single fixed pulley: changes only the DIRECTION of the force You pull down & weight goes up Copy illustration and FIXED PULLEY LABEL in journal

4 corners What does a single fixed pulley change? GO to the correct corner AFTER you push in your chair. A) direction B) size C) position D) color A)

2 Pulley SYSTEMS (1) Single fixed pulley system: can be fixed or moveable…single moveable provides a mechanical advantage……single fixed provides NO mechanical advantage Or (2) Two pulley system: one fixed & one moveable……if effort is applied upward… greater mechanical advantage than if effort is applied downward.

Independent Practice: Which pulley does not reduce the amount of effort? Copy the question in journal. Write your answer on Nearpod.

A Copy the correct one in your journal.

D Copy the correct one in your journal.

Close: On your I-pad: Illustrate and label 1) a single fixed pulley and 2) a single moveable pulley Then raise your hand to show me.
