On a brisk, clear Christmas Eve, Martin Luther, a German theologian, was walking home under a bright, starry sky, which was so beautiful that he wanted to recreate its beauty for his children. His idea was to decorate a large evergreen tree with glowing candles.

Every year the people of Norway give the city of London a present. It is a big Christmas tree and it stands in Trafalgar Square. It was Peter the Great who introduced that tradition in Russia.

Many families decorate their houses with a Christmas tree.
