Winter solstice, or Yule as it was known in ancient times, celebrates the light and the sun's rebirth each solar year. The Celts kept a piece of the charred log to light the new log in the coming solstice. In France it is a traditional dessert: log-shaped Christmas cakes, also known as chocolate logs, in origin a facsimile of the actual Yule log.

The pagan peoples of ancient France, Britain, and Ireland assigned mistletoe a special role in their religious beliefs and they harvested it in special ceremonial ways.
