Tinsel was invented in Nuremberg, Germany in 1610, and was originally made of shredded silver.

The ingredients for the modern mince pie can be traced to the return of European crusaders from the Holy Land. In Tudor England, shrid pies as they were known then. The tradition of eating Christmas pies in December continued through to the Victorian era, although by then its recipe had become sweeter and its size reduced.

Winter solstice, or Yule as it was known in ancient times, celebrates the light and the sun's rebirth each solar year. Celtic pagans used oak logs, decorated with mistletoe and ribbons, to burn for 12 days during winter solstice. Traditionally they tossed the ashes on fields or put them inside amulets. The Celts kept a piece of the charred log to light the new log in the coming solstice. In France it is a traditional dessert: log-shaped Christmas cakes, also known as chocolate logs, in origin a facsimile of the actual Yule log.

Poinsettia (пуансетия) or Christmas star become the floral symbol of Christmas.

The pagan peoples of ancient France, Britain, and Ireland assigned mistletoe a special role in their religious beliefs and they harvested it in special ceremonial ways. They believed that mistletoe possessed magical powers and that the rare plants that grew on oak trees were the most powerful of all. Therefore, when the Druids harvested the plant, they cut it with golden sickles and were careful never to let it touch the ground. The Druids called the plant “all-healer” and thought it had the power to cure many ills. Today we know that mistletoe berries are highly poisonous, however. Mistletoe was also thought to attract good luck and to ward off witchcraft.

On this day in almost every house there are sounds of Christmas music. The traditional English songs are "We Wish You a Merry Christmas".
