Presentation transcript:

What is Earth Science? Earth Science is the study of Earth and its position in the universe. It is a combination of the following four sciences: Geology Oceanography Meteorology Astronomy

What is Geology? Geology is the study of the history, structure, processes and composition of Earth’s solid surface down to Earth’s center.

What is Meteorology? Meteorology is the study of Earth’s atmosphere including weather and climate.

What is Oceanography? Oceanography is the study of all aspects of Earth’s oceans. For example: Currents (warm and cold) Ocean tides role in climate

What is Astronomy? Astronomy is the study of the universe----that is all the matter, time, energy and space.

What is Density? DENSITY is a physical property of matter, as each element and compound has a unique density associated with it. Density defined in a qualitative manner as the measure of the relative "heaviness" of objects with a constant volume.

How do we calculate density? Density is equal to an items mass (g),divided by its volume (mL). Density= Mass(g) Volume(mL)

Physical Properties of Matter Ice Water

What are Physical Properties and Changes? Physical properties can be observed or measured without changing the composition of matter. Physical properties are used to observe and describe matter. Physical properties include: appearance, texture, color, odor, melting point, boiling point, density, solubility, polarity, and many others.

What are the three states of matter? The three states of matter are: solid, liquid, and gas. The melting point and boiling point are related to changes of the state of matter. All matter may exist in any of three physical states of matter.

The States of Matter

Physical Changes A physical change takes place without any changes in molecular composition. The same element or compound is present before and after the change. The same molecule is present through out the changes. Physical changes are related to physical properties since some measurements require that changes be made.

How does physical change affect the objects density? As an object changes from a Solid-> Liquid -> Gas The Density Decreases Gas -> Liquid -> Solid The Density Increases

The Exception To This Rule is: Water When water changes its physical state, the change in it’s density is that of no other. As water changes from a Gas->Liquid->Solid It’s density DECREASES Solid -> Liquid -> Gas It’s denisty INCREASES

Density of Planet Earth Earth’s Interior (p. 10 in your reference table)

Reference Table p.10 Inferred Properties of Planet Earth

Comparison of Oceanic to Continental Crust Looking at p. 10 in your reference table, which crust is more dense, oceanic (basalt) or continental (granite)? Do you think this has anything to do with the continental crust being above the oceanic crust?

Lab Activity #1: Density of Fluids Please read over your lab procedure and calculate the density of water and oil. You will have 45 minutes to complete this activity.
