MANAGING BEHAVIOUR AND RAISING SELF ESTEEM TEACHING STRATEGIES AND LEARNING THE USE OF ICT IN LEARNING

ICT in learning Education in the 21st century will almost certainly involve the exploitation of ICT technology. Both teachers and TA will be required to acquire ICT capabilities or its effective use Supporting Every Child (2009) Walton and Goddard

What is Ict? Activities often used in the name of ICT Use of interactive whiteboard CD-ROM resources Use of computers and printers Internet research Games and software Any others?

Consider the following questions Is the use of ICT a ‘must’ in a modern classroom? What might be the benefits for pupils and specific groups e.g. EAL needs, SEN needs Using ICT in English (Literacy) – how can it be used to raise achievement in all areas of literacy – reading, writing and speaking and listening?

Benefits and challenges In small groups identify 5 benefits of using ICT in education and 3 challenges of using ICT in the classroom How can the challenges be overcome?

Benefits Engaging activities Differentiation - programs Non judgemental – can keep trying Infinite resource – internet Develops independent learners and research skills Motivation – work can be produced well

Challenges Internet safety/bullying Cost Plagiarism

E-learning “Technology has the potential to transform learning” (Becta, 2008 in Walton and Goddard, p154) New phase of ICT use sees the introduction of VLE Accessing lesson resources at home Submission of work remotely Computer marking of exams/tests Pupils not totally reliant on teacher – independent learners Pupils can learn at own pace Electronically stored assessments records – comparison easier

EFFECT OF ICT Non threatening environment – gives immediate feedback For many learning may have become associated with the fear of failure and feel they lack of control over achievement The computer can provide a neutral setting – learners can control the pace Use of ICT gaming technology to engage learners

EFFECT OF ICT Using a computer can avoid personality/relationship problems with teachers Stimulated by fast moving and responsive nature of the technology, its culture and language – as shown by the dialect of texting Ease of access to an almost infinite range of dynamically presented information via the internet

USE OF ICT The computer allows pupils of all ability levels to produce high quality work. Computers are predictable in there responses – consistent interaction that pupils with BESD may find it easier to relate to

How important is ICT to developing learning? View of one author “ICT should be used in every subject scheme of work.” (Sharpe et al, 2001:167) View of one report The Rose Report (2009) The Independent Review of Primary Curriculum – identified ICT as an important and perhaps under-used aid to the pupil ‘s learning development and skills.

Where we are now Use of computer technology in the classroom has become one of the biggest additions to the teacher ‘toolkit’ – in whatever sector of education a practitioner teaches As a teaching assistant you may use ICT to support teaching and learning in the classroom. The TA may also have to monitor the safe, correct use of ICT equipment and software.
