Key Stage 2 SATs 13th February 2014

Objectives of this session To explain the format of the SATs What are we doing in school? What can you do to support your children at home? To look at examples of SATs papers To give you an opportunity to ask any questions.

What are KS2 SATs? SATs or Statutory Assessment Tests are for all Key Stage 2 children. All children in England sit these tests in the same week of the year in May. This year it is the week of 12th May. Children sit tests in English Reading, Grammar (which includes spelling), and Maths.

Expectations Class teacher submit a teacher assessment for every child (based on their class work) The SATS tests assess pupils working between level 3-5 If a child is assessed below Level 3 they are below the level of the test and are not entered. The expected level for Key Stage 2 SATs is Level 4 If the child is thought to be working above this, they will be considered for the level 6 tests.

What are SAT Levels? Children working below level 3 do not take the SAT Tests. Level 3: Below the nationally expected level of attainment for a pupil at the end of Year 6. Level 4: The nationally expected level of attainment for a pupil at the end of Year 6. Level 5: Above the nationally expected level of attainment for a pupil at the end of Year 6. At school, we also use sub-levels as a, b or c (a being the highest) e.g. A level 4c is a low level 4, a 4b is a secure level 4 and a 4a is a high level 4.

What’s the Difference Between Attainment and Progress? At the end of KS1 (Year 2) your child will have been assessed and given a level. These levels are used by the government to predict individual children’s progress by the end of Year 6. (Level thresholds are not yet known by us). Monday 12th May English Reading Test- possible total of 50 marks. Children get 1 hour to read the booklet and to answer the questions. Variety of types of questions varying from multiple choice, short answers which involve a word or phrase or longer type answers. Marks awarded are 1,2 or 3 and these are clearly stated on the papers Reading questions test a variety of skills including comprehension, inference and deduction.

Reading Paper IN SCHOOL We have been practising these skills all year with their homework. The children take part in guided reading every week. AT HOME Encourage them to read anything - articles from newspapers, books, magazines, internet and explain what it is about and how they know.

Reading Test Examples Some questions will ask the children to find answers directly from the reading booklets they are given.

Others will require the children to deduce answers by using words or phrases as evidence.

Some questions will ask the children to evaluate what they have read, again using the text to back up their answers.

Teacher Assessment of Writing Three strands are assessed through the writing tests: Sentence structure and punctuation Text structure and organisation Composition and effect. The composition and effect strand carries the largest number of available marks and is the main focus for this particular test.

Writing Range The range of writing covered in school which is used to inform assessment judgements, includes the following: Instructions Persuasive text Discussion text Recount Report Explanation Play script Poetry Narrative texts (a story, or based on any of the above formats)

Wednesday 14th May Maths Paper 1 It tests all areas of maths, from calculations to shape and space and data handling. A possible 40 marks available for this test. Mental Maths Test This is a CD test with 5 seconds, 10 seconds and 15 seconds available for different questions. A possible 20 marks available for this test.

Mental Maths Test (No Pressure) Numeracy Mental Test: A 20 minute mental arithmetic paper.

Thursday 15th May Maths Paper 2 This is also has a possible 40 marks available. NOT CALCULATOR

Science At Hazel Slade we also test pupils in Science using past test papers and level them accordingly: The biggest change for KS2 SATs for 2014 is that although there are no formal science SATs for all, ‘science sampling’ is being reintroduced. Under this system, 9,500 children – five children from 1,500 schools – will be randomly selected to take a science test. Schools that are selected will be notified by mid-May, and are legally obliged to participate if chosen. The science sampling test will comprise three papers, each of no more than 25 minutes, to be taken within a two-week period from Monday 2 June 2014. Results will only be published at a national level; neither schools nor parents will be given their children’s individual results, and they won’t be used in league tables. Science sampling will take place every two years.

What help can children have? In the reading test, children must read the text and questions by themselves, but MAY have help recording their answers, if this is done in a normal classroom situation. In maths teachers can read questions to any child who asks, some children will have the whole paper read to them, on a one to one. Teachers can encourage, but not guide or say that an answer is correct or incorrect. Some children can be given up to 25% extra time if they have identified learning needs. This has to be applied for in advance. Words on a test paper can be transcribed where a marker may not be able to read a child’s answer. How can parents help? The best help is interest taken in learning and progress. Attending meetings and parents evenings. Supporting home learning – SATs booklets/Internet resources (see website) Not putting children under too much pressure Ensuring children arrive for tests: - in good time - having had breakfast - having gone to bed at a reasonable time 9 December 2017

AT HOME When reading with your children ask them to identify nouns, adjectives, verbs, adverbs etc… Encourage them to use a range of punctuation in writing and explain how to use them. Help them learn their spellings and recap previous weeks. To support your children to prepare for these maths papers it is essential that they know: their tables know their number bonds 1, 10, 100 mathematical vocabulary significant maths facts (shape) Maths games on the internet (see school web site for helpful websites in the Parents section – SATs preparation 2014)

The week It is essential the children attend school everyday that week. Make sure the children are at school on time. Let them relax ANY QUESTIONS?
