ELA Test Grades 3-5 March 28, 29, 30 Math Test May 2, 3, 4

Why is my child being tested? To measure student’s knowledge and overall achievement. To measure student’s mastery of a specific skill. To monitor the performance of schools and school districts.

Testing Accommodations All English Language Learners will be given time and a half to take the test. Any ELL student that tested out of ESL will be given time and a half for 2 years thereafter. Anyone who is an ELL student in school for less than a year does not have to take the English Language Arts test. ALL students MUST take the Math Test. Students with an IEP will be given accommodations according to their IEP.

Multiple Choice Questions Grades 3-5 Some examples of ELA multiple choice questions are: What is this story mostly about? Which statement is a fact/opinion? Why did the author most likely write this article? What is the main problem in the story? Which event in the story could not really happen? What is the author’s point of view?

Sample ELA Multiple Choice Question (Grade 3) What detail from the passage shows that Miss Franny is becoming friends with Winn-Dixie? A. “he was okay, as long as he could see me.” B. “She thought he was a bear.” C. “he came in and lay down with ‘huummmppff.’” D. “‘He’ll be good,’” I told her.” E. “That dog is smiling at me.”

Sample ELA Multiple Choice Question (Grade 4) Which is the best summary of this story?   A Maushop lives near the Wampanoag people. He goes to talk to the Sun on the other side of the world. The Sun calls Maushop his younger brother. Maushop is also friends with the spiders. The spiders weave a net for Maushop to use. B The Sun leaves the land of the Wampanoag people because he is not happy with them. When the Sun does not come back, the people turn to Maushop for help. He finds the Sun on the other side of the world and finds out why the Sun will not come back. When the people say they will change their ways, Maushop finds a way to get the Sun to return. C The Sun and Maushop are friends. When the Sun leaves the land of the Wampanoag people, they ask Maushop to help get the Sun to come back. Maushop makes two trips to the other side of the world. D When the Sun leaves the land of the Wampanoag people, they want him to come back. They need help to find out where the Sun went. Maushop agrees to go look for the Sun and tell him that the people want him to come back. Maushop is able to do this because he is a giant and can travel around the world quickly.

ELA Short Response Questions Grades 3-5 Some examples of ELA short response questions are: Fill in a chart (describe a character, compare and contrast two characters or describe how a character has changed) Answering a question about the text using text based evidence from the story. They will always ask them to use 2 examples from the text and they must state a claim in their answer. I believe that the character was trying to do good in the story. I know this because he _______

ELA Extended Response Question Grade 3 Read a selection and write and essay about text comprehension. They do not have to compare 2 stories. They should add “voice” to their extended response. Writing Mechanics will be graded based on Extended Response Question.

Sample Extended Response Question (Grade 3) Think about what happened in the story, “Sun Catcher.” How does the reader know this story could not happen in real life? What do the characters do that would not be possible? Use details from the story to support your answer. In your answer, be sure to include: □How the reader knows this story could not happen in real life? □What the characters do that would not be possible? □Use details form the story to support your answer.

How to help your children prepare for the ELA test Take them to the library and encourage them to read a variety of genres. (fables and poems) Provide time for independent reading daily at home. (Read for Books) (Time them) Ask your child to share what they are reading (summary, predictions, connections). Book Club (read along with your child) Make sure that your child completes ALL of their homework assignments. Continue to read over the summer!

Expected Reading Levels-By June Grade 3 Level P or above Grade 4 Level S/T or above Grade 5 Level V or above This is the expected level for them to read by June in April they are tested and some of the text on the ELA are higher than this especially in grades 4 and 5.

How to help your child prepare for the Math Test ▪ Make sure that your child knows the multiplication tables. IXL Make sure that your child completes ALL of his/her homework assignments.

Helpful Math Hints Grade 3 uses a ruler. Grades 4 and 5 use a ruler and a protractor. Write the answer on the line. Include the unit measurement in all of the answers. Show their work not just the answer.

Remind your child to…. Read the directions before each story. Make sure they have a good understanding of a question before choosing an answer. Make sure they read all of the answer choices before picking an answer. Remind them to eliminate answer choices that don’t make sense. ALWAYS go back to the text to find your answer. Reread the parts of the story that they don’t understand.

Remind your child to…. Use evidence from the text not their imagination when writing a response. If you get to a word that you don’t understand use the words around it to help you. Write neatly. Not to leave any questions blank.

How to Prepare for the test Make sure your child gets a good night’s sleep and eats breakfast the day of the test. Make sure your child arrives to school on time on the day of the test. Wish your child good luck and give him/her words of encouragement. If your child is ill please call the office. Explain to your child to use his/her time wisely. If they get stuck on a question move on.
