Let’s Compare and Contrast We’re going to read an excerpt from the Declaration of Independence and an excerpt from Declaration of the Rights of Man As we read them, think about how they are the same and how they are different

An excerpt from The Declaration of Independence: We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed. That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. We, therefore, the Representatives of the united States of America… solemnly publish and declare, That these United Colonies are, and of Right ought to be Free and Independent States; that they are Absolved from all Allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the State of Great Britain, is and ought to be totally dissolved; And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor.

An excerpt from The Declaration of the Rights of Man: The National Assembly recognizes and proclaims in the presence and under the auspices of the Supreme Being the following rights of man and of the citizen: 1. Men are born and remain free and equal in rights. Social distinctions can only be founded upon the general good. 2. The aim of all political association is the preservation of the natural … rights of man. These rights are liberty, property, security, and resistance to oppression. 4. Liberty consists of being able to do everything which injures no one else… 10. No one shall be disquieted on account of his opinions, including his religious views… 11. The free communication of ideas and opinions is one of the most precious of the rights of man. Every citizen may, accordingly, speak, write, and print with freedom, being responsible, however, for such abuses of this freedom as shall be defined by law. 16.
