The Value of Occupational Therapy Quality Programme Manager, RCOT Mental Health The Value of Occupational Therapy 20 June 2017 Genevieve Smyth, Professional Advisor, Mental Health and Learning Disabilities, RCOT Julia Roberts Quality Programme Manager, RCOT

This session will cover: Introductions and background to the project Mental Health – the Value of Occupational Therapy Update and current status of project Discussion time – what do you want to do with the new documents? What support do you need from RCOT to do this? Feedback and close

Mental Health – the Value of Occupational Therapy     The COT publication “Recovering Ordinary Lives – the strategy for occupational therapy in mental health services 2007 -2017” finishes soon. It will be replaced in Occupational Therapy Week 2018 with four new documents, one for each of the countries to market and promote the value of occupational therapy in mental health. This is part of the Occupational Therapy – Improving Lives saving money campaign.

The COT campaign Occupational Therapy – Improving Lives Saving Money has four strands to date: Urgent Care – the value of occupational therapy (Nov 2015) Reducing the pressure on hospitals (Nov 2016) Primary care and communities (July 2017) Mental Health – the Value of Occupational Therapy (Nov 2018)

Any last examples by 30 June 2017! Mental Health – the Value of Occupational Therapy     The project has an External reference group of occupational therapists to steer the work. The documents will use completed stories from the mental health DEMO template. You can find the template here: http://cotimprovinglives.com/tell-your-story/ Any last examples by 30 June 2017!

Mental Health – the Value of Occupational Therapy     We have 100 completed templates so far: Wales 19 Scotland 27 Northern Ireland 8 England 45

The four areas where we have examples from across the UK are: Return to work Keeping adults living independently Dementia support Forensics The three areas where we nearly have examples from across the UK are: Community groups improving independence Addressing physical health Maternal mental health     The two areas where we have nothing: Supporting children's mental health Promotion of mental well-being and prevention

Mental Health – the Value of Occupational Therapy     When we release the documents we would like to provide supporting materials to help you promote the documents and the profession. In the past we have produced, for example, presentations about the documents for occupational therapists and others, letter templates to MPs, quick reference guides, CPD sessions, leaflets, films .

Mental Health – the Value of Occupational Therapy     Discussion time… What do you want to be able to do with the documents? (function) What support do you need from RCOT to do this? (form) Form should follow function!
