DYW in Action SQA and DYW SQA Qualifications Partnership Models SQA Regional Managers Overview of presentation

SQA and DYW SQA understands the needs of learners and of employers Key agencies are working together to take a leading role in delivering DYW: SQA Education Scotland Skills Development Scotland Scottish Funding Council DYW Regional Groups Employers, colleges, schools, and training providers also asked to play an active role SQA is a key partner in the implementation of DYW. Under direction of the Scottish Government, SQA and partner agencies, take a leading role on the practical implementation of DYW and making it a success. Understanding the needs of learners and employers SQA already has many of the pieces in place to enable DYW recommendations to be a success. We are in a pivotal position to help make the connections between schools, colleges, training providers, employers and other stakeholders. Uniquely, SQA already works with them all.

SQA Nationals, Highers and Advanced Highers, Scottish Baccalaureates SQA National Progression Awards SQA National Certificates SQA Skills for Work SQA Awards SQA SVQs SQA Higher Nationals SQA Professional Development Awards National Progression Awards Designed to assess a defined set of skills and knowledge in specialist vocational area. They are linked to National Occupational Standards – underpinning skills and Knowledge for SVQs Those preparing for work, with opportunities to develop skills sought after by employers, progression pathway to FE or in workplace. Eg Construction to Childcare and Digital Literacy to Software Development. Skills for Work Practical experience of work-based skills Opportunities for partnership working with college and employer To give experience of the world of work first hand. 22 courses available eg Hospitality, Energy, Laboratory Science, Uniformed & Emergency Services , Food & Drink – Textile Manufacturing. Awards Recognise the life and work skills that learners gain from activities they may already be doing whilst at school/college – such as sport, mentoring, voluntary ,enterprise and fund raising activities. Wider achievment – giving opportunity for young people to get formally recognition for wide range of activities, mentoring, sports activities, volunteering and Characterised by their flexible nature, they are nationally recognized Suitable for a wide range of people at different stages They provide learners with opportunities to acquire skills, recognise achievement and promote confidence through independent thinking and positive attitudes Available at SCQF levels 2-6 eg Personal Development, Leadership & Enterprise and Employability SVQs Demonstrates competence in a particular occupational area Normally delivered and assessed in the workplace Based on National Occupational Standards At SCQF levels 4 to 11 Must be accredited by SQA Accreditation HNs Higher National Certificates and Diplomas (HNC/HND) Higher education qualifications Internationally recognized Prepare students for employment and enable advanced entry to a degree programme Can be delivered flexibly Designed in partnership with colleges, universities and employers based on National Occupational Standards At SCQF levels 7 and 8 Professional Development Awards Shorter than HNs, PDAs are designed for those in a career or vocation to extend or broaden skills Aligned to National Occupational Standards or professional body requirements Made up of HN Units and/or SVQ Units Available at SCQF levels 6-12

Partnership Models School/College/Employer School/Employer There are already a range of partnership models – all have their own benefits for the young people – to help them develop skills, knowledge and to develop the right attitudes for work and the employer. A partnership approach allows a range of vocational qualifications to be delivered, access to industry, real-life industry experience, benefit of the expertise of the partner which cannot be offered by the school alone. For employers it is an opportunity to inspire young people, make them aware of your organisation, what skills are required, what the job roles are. It is also great for your staff development and you could have young people wanting to work with you. Guidance on partnership working developed by College Development Network and Education Scotland.

North East Scotland College Construction Academy Partnership with Aberdeen City Council Open to all city schools Skills For Work Construction Crafts (SCQF 4) 2 afternoons per week at NESCOL 2 afternoons in work placement Initial cohort of 12 pupils Partnered with ACC’s work Experience unit; Robertsons and Chap Construction have already committed placements for this. Rest of week (1 afternoon and 1 day spent in school). NESCOL have also set up construction programmes at SCQF 5 and 6

Apex Hotels School and Apex staff created a pre-apprenticeship in Hospitality Working across all departments 2 afternoons a week Practical learning, understanding of the wide ranging job roles in hospitality Pipeline of talent to recruit into Hotels Linking to SQA qualifications next year Same model now being used with Schools in Dundee and Glasgow Head Teacher Steve Ross met with HR Director at Apex hotels to discuss how they could work together to develop a sustainable relationship. With the school and Apex hotel staff got together and created a pre-apprenticeship in Hospitality programme and gave 3 pupils an opportunity that would not have previously been available to them. They attended Apex 2 afternoon per week to support their practical learning and they worked across all departments. These young people were not bound for further education but this gave them the opportunity to move into a business that suited their interests and needs. The positive feedback from this programme has allowed collaboration with schools in Dundee and Glasgow to use the same model. This is providing real benefits for the hotel group and for the young people.

Multi-Partnership Working Partnership between Glasgow City Council Education Services, Glasgow Kelvin College, Smithycroft Secondary School, Network Rail and Amey Glasgow City Council Education Services, Glasgow Kelvin College and a number of Glasgow secondary schools and business partners work in collaboration to offer the SQA’s National Certificate in Electrical Engineering through a one year scholarship programme — NC Electrical Engineering Scholarship — providing a unique pathway into a range of engineering occupations for S5 and S6 pupils in Glasgow. The scholarship programme combines both school and college-based study, with pupils working towards an SQA National Certificate in Electrical Engineering as well as undertaking work experience placements. Your Regional Manager Every business working with SQA has a dedicated Regional Manager – one point of contact who will take the time to get to know you and how you work, and who understands the particular challenges in your area. We understand the needs of learners and of employers and how we can help one group to help the other, creating a more qualified, more motivated and more productive workforce.

How do I get my model approved – partnership agreements Updates on DYW and what is happening as it move forward. ie progression pathways to job roles being developed, regional group updates, new models of delivery, where to find information on – Foundation, Modern and new Graduate Apprenticeships: FA – 8 + 1 Frameworks (SDS and SQA will have content), Automotive Engineering - 14 Regional Groups now established includes, employers, schools and colleges to help drive the DYW agenda and support young people into jobs. Engineering Preparatory product being developed by SEMTA to develop maths, workshop and health and safety skills, in a workplace context (level 5) (optional) Modern Apprenticeship Frameworks available on SDS website – how you can help prepare your young people ! Graduate Apprenticeships – SCQF level 8 – 10 and 11 – alternative to academic route – Morgan Sindall re Civil Engineering, CGI – ICT
