Biodiversity is about nature; animals, plants and fungi. What is biodiversity? Biodiversity is about nature; animals, plants and fungi.

Why is biodiversity important? Biodiversity is a big part of human life. Without it we wouldn’t be able to survive.

A little bit about biodiversity A popular way to measure biodiversity is by counting how many species are living in the area. Usually the closer you are to the equator the better the biodiversity.

A photographer photographed this Metrosiderous tree and all 58 species he found crawling, flying, or taking root in it.

Junior and Senior Infants …have you been listening? Biodiversity is about fungi, plants and what?

Threats to Biodiversity Biodiversity is under threat because of human activities. Threats include population growth and habitat change, the over use of resources and pollution and climate change.

Threats to biodiversity As more and more people inhabit the Earth there is less space for animals, plants and fungi to grow. Lots of habitats, especially forests like the rainforests are being destroyed by humans.

Threats to biodiversity Biodiversity is decreasing in the past hundred years because of human activities. Humans are overusing natural resources and polluting the earth. This poor turtle was harmed by human pollution.

Threats to biodiversity Climate change is also playing a big part in the decrease of species. Polar bears are one of the most at risk animals at the moment. Their ice is melting and they have to swim long distances to get food.

First and Second Classes…have you been listening? What animals are under threat from the melting ice?

Third and Fourth Classes…have you been listening? What animal can get trapped in the plastic that holds drink cans together?

How we can help? To help protect we must raise awareness of the importance of plants, animals and habitats.

How can we help ? We can help by not harming nature. Help by cleaning up our local schools, churches, playgrounds and any places where plants and animals live in your area.

Ways to help at home. Reduce, reuse and recycle. Turn off taps when brushing your teeth. Turn off lights when you’re leaving the room. Use green ways of travelling where possible.

Fifth Class…have you been listening? List the ways you can help protect biodiversity at home.
